From the Desk of Chris Addington,
Romeo’s Chino Valley:
Just when you thought it was safe to eat Pizza again up comes Romeo’s (Retired Old Men Eating Out Somewhere), had a meet up at Aroma Pizza for a gathering of the Week. This group meets up every Friday somewhere in the Quad Cities. Since this writer is close to CV it’s our time of the month to join in the ritual of Pizza, Diet Pepsi, Motorhead talk, Motorhead stories, Motorhead hmmmm and shared time with fellow Motorheads. Turn out was good. I normally bring a bundle of papers, 50 and ran out, Roddn’ AZ publication represents our car culture and sharing with our fellow Motorheads.

SAMs Place, Havasu Breakfast Meet up:
The breakfast meet up as SAMS brought out a kool ride. This kool Plymouth Business Coup with a blower/427/Pro Street came out. Its for sale around 30K if you know anybody interested. Good Motorhead talking and seeing ole friends.

Terriorial Days Car Show Chino Valley:
Good event day before Labor Day. I found this kool ’50 Shoe Box mild custom with a lace paint. Look for event coverage in upcoming months on event and feature on this kool custom ride.

RELAY BASICS
When you are wiring a project and have an accessory that draws a lot of amperage, and you do not want to run a large gauge wire from the fuse panel to the device relays offer you an alternative. The mission of a relay is to control a large electrical load from a small electrical trigger. A relay consists of a coil, contacts and housing. I prefer to use waterproof versions as my preference even inside the vehicle. The coil sends a message to the contacts to come together via electromagnetic field. When the trigger is released, the coil stops generating a signal and the contacts move apart. Basically, you run a high amperage wire to relay from device. Then from the relay you run a high amperage wire to power source, battery, fuse panel, sub panel etc. The trigger wire can come from a switch of your choice as its low amperage. Yes, to further confuse you, you can even run the ground as a trigger, nice when you do not have available power. The relay is grounded for the trigger to work.

A 5-pin relay is similar to 4-pin but has an additional pin 87a. Pin is the normally closed contact of the relay, when the relay is not energized, the contact is closed, allowing power to flow through the circuit. Relay is energized, the contact opens, and power goes to the normally open contact at pin 87. The additional pin on a 5-pin relay provides more options in wiring, allowing complex switching. FYI, a 5-pin relay can be used to switch between two different circuits. I normally do a wiring diagram for the specific relay and test it before final connection to make sure logic works.

Power of Relays! A few years back my hydraulic jack’s mother board failed, and it was too expensive to replace. In reality the mother board was just a series of relays. I figured how to use a series of relays where I could control the jacks going up and down with a few switches and good labeling and much more resistant to failure.

Another example just installed a vacuum pump and tank for a high lift cam motor to get the brake booster to work since the engine had little vacuum. The pump/tank unit I bought had it connected to the battery and needed a switch for a 30-amp accessory. It did have a relay for the pressure switch but not for the on/off for power. I ran a second relay for the power side and made the trigger wire go to the ignition side of the switch, so it only comes on if the ignition switch is on saving battery drain. Please Share
