My brother married the blind girl who had been his closest friend since childhood. After he passed away, she finally revealed the heartbreaking reason he had chosen to spend his life with her.
My younger brother, Ed, was only seven when he first brought Lily home after school.
Lily had been blind since birth. Many children avoided her because they didn't understand her condition, but Ed never treated her as though she were different.
When our family met Lily's adoptive parents, they explained that her biological mother had left shortly after she was born.
From that day forward, Ed became even more determined to protect her. He walked beside her on the way home. Carried her schoolbag. Saved her a seat at lunch. And made certain she never felt alone.
As the years passed, their childhood friendship slowly became something deeper. During high school, Ed once held Lily's hand and made her a promise. "One day, I'm going to place a wedding ring on this finger."
Years later, after they completed college, he kept his word.
When Ed proposed, I cried with happiness. Lily was no longer simply my brother's best friend. She became his wife — and the sister I had always wished for.
They appeared completely devoted to one another. Ed described everything for her: sunsets, unfamiliar rooms, the expressions on people's faces, the colors of flowers she could only feel beneath her fingertips. Lily understood him in a way the rest of us never could.
Their marriage seemed peaceful and full of love.
Then, shortly before their fifth anniversary, Lily called me in tears.
Ed had suffered a sudden medical emergency and had been rushed into surgery.
By the time I reached the hospital, Lily was sitting alone in the waiting area, clutching her cane with both hands. I sat beside her. For ten unbearable hours, we waited for someone to bring us news.
Eventually, the doctor approached. His expression told me everything before he spoke.
Ed had not survived.
The words shattered me. I felt like the ground beneath me had disappeared, leaving me trapped inside a nightmare I couldn't escape.
While I struggled to understand that my brother was gone, Lily reached for my sleeve.
"Alice," she whispered. "We need to talk. It's urgent."
I stared at her. "Not now, Lily. Please."
But she tightened her grip. "It has to be now — before your parents arrive."
Something in her voice made me uneasy. "What are you talking about?"
Lily took an unsteady breath. "There is something you need to know about Ed."
My heart began pounding. "What kind of secret?"
Her hands felt cold when I took them in mine.
"Your family never truly understood why he married me," she said quietly. "Ed wanted you to know the real reason, but only when the time was right."
The waiting room seemed to shift around me. "Was it about money? Insurance? Something he inherited?"
Lily slowly shook her head. "No." Her voice grew quieter. "It's far more painful than that."
Then she held my hands tightly. "This will break your heart, Alice, but you need to hear it from me."
She turned her face toward the hospital corridor, listening for approaching footsteps. "Your parents will be here in five minutes."
Then she leaned closer and whispered: "Listen carefully — and please don't repeat what I'm about to tell you until you understand everything."
