📸 Wayback Wednesday | Moore Academy Music Class 🎶
Pine Apple, Alabama – May 30, 1906
This striking photo, taken in front of Moore Academy, is part of the Moore Academy Alumni Association collection currently on display at the school. It captures a moment in time from the 1906 music class. The handwritten note on the back reads “Julia Melton’s class.”
Julia Melton (1889–1983), daughter of John Franklin and Lula Ward Melton of Pine Apple, would have been about 17 when this photo was taken—likely one of the young women pictured here. Julia attended Judson College in Marion and earned her teaching certificate in 1907. She went on to teach at Watson’s Crossing from 1908–1909 before marrying Dewitt Talmadge Stuart of Ackerville in 1910. Together, they had four children: Winston, Mary Claire, Julia Melton, and Talmadge Jr.
While we don’t know the identities of the other girls in the photo, we hope someone might help us solve this historical puzzle!
