Meet Maria Tallchief - a ballerina of Osage descent, who became one of the most legendary figures in the history of dance 🩰💃

Born in Oklahoma in 1925, Maria started ballet and music lessons at a young age and quickly gained recognition for her talent. Torn between a career as a pianist or dancer, it wasn't until her mid teens that becoming a ballerina was what she hoped to be. Tallchief was renowned for her exquisite technique, captivating stage presence, and iconic performances. Performances that would later cause her to become a household name across the globe.

Today Tallchief is known as the first Native American Prima Ballerina and her impact has opened doors for diversity and inclusion in the world of classical ballet and serves as motivation for numerous dancers to always follow their dreams!

Wilma Mankiller was a prominent Native American leader who was born in 1945 in the state of Oklahoma 🪶🏵

She proudly grew up in the Cherokee Nation and despite facing obstacles such as discrimination, sexism and poverty, she remained a strong advocate and developer within her community. In 1985, she made history by becoming the first woman elected as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation!

During her time in office, she focused heavily on improving healthcare, education, and infrastructure for her people and outside of politics, she served as a Social Worker for children.

Her legacy is one of courage, empowerment and resilience and she serves as an inspiration to both men and women of the Cherokee Nation to date!

Susan La Flesche Picotte was the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States 🩺💊

Born in 1865 on the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska, she overcame numerous obstacles to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. After witnessing a member of her Reservation be denied treatment due to their ethnicity and eventually die, Picotte dedicated her life to providing medical care to her community, advocating for public health initiatives, and fighting against the injustices faced by Native Americans.

Her legacy serves as an inspiration for people everywhere to persevere in the face of adversity and to use their skills to help others.

"Counting on Katherine," by Helaine Becker, beautifully illustrates the life and success of one of NASA's most historic mathematicians.

Katherine Johnson, born in 1918, was a talented and brilliant woman who had a passion for numbers since she was young. Throughout her career she shattered boundaries as an African American woman when numerous opportunities were out of reach for her due to sexism and racism. Her calculations played a vital role in the accomplishment of several space missions, such as the groundbreaking Apollo 11 moon landing and her 40 year career in science, math and writing earned her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.

To date, Katherine Johnson's remarkable contributions serve as an inspiration and set the foundation for upcoming mathematicians and scientists in the US and beyond.

Meet Shirley Chisholm! She was a great US politician who was born on November 30, 1924.

In 1968, she made history by becoming the first African American woman elected to the US Congress. In 1972, Chisholm achieved another significant milestone as she became the initial African American nominee for the Democratic Presidential campaign.

Throughout her career, she advocated for racial and gender equality, and would go on to establish the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women's Political Caucus. Outside of politics, Shirley Chisholm had a diverse career in education and served as a teacher and Chairwoman at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.

Her legacy continues to inspire generations of politicians and activists striving for social justice, equality and inclusion all over the world 🌍🎙

Helen Rodriguez Trias was born July 7th 1929.

After receiving her Medical Degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, she built the first clinic for newborn infants. Under her leadership, infant mortality rates decreased over 40%. Despite financial struggles and encounters with sexism, racism and discrimination throughout her career, Helen remained steadfast, drawing her strength from her faith, her love for people and her support system.

She was an educator, activist, lobbyist, pediatrician and was the first Hispanic woman to become President for the American Public Health Association.

Today, she serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
