Supporting paid parental leave is “common sense” to Bobbi Jean Ozanick, a stroke telemetry nurse at Allegheny General Hospital.

“You’re already vulnerable. Your baby is already vulnerable,” she said. “You deserve to be able to have time with your baby without having to worry how to live.”

Ozanick was among the Service Employees International Union nurses, service workers and caregivers who gathered with elected officials and union leaders at a rally in the Lower Hill District before Pittsburgh's Labor Day parade.

Dozens of union nurses and nurse practitioners attended a rally across the street from Allegheny General Hospital, a day before SEIU Pennsylvania kicked off contract negotiations with the multibillion-dollar health care network.

AGH has the highest level of patient acuity in Western Pennsylvania – meaning the hospital receives the most patients with critical needs.

“In order to get back into compliance with the staffing ratios outlined in the contract, AGH would need dozens more nurses each day,” said Annale Yobbi, an AGH LifeFlight nurse and union chapter president.

With Labor Day around the corner, the Pittsburgh Progress is highlighting important moments and figures in the city’s union history – people like Fannie Sellins, a union organizer who arrived in the Pittsburgh region 110 years ago.

When Jeremiah’s Place decided to expand, it assessed ZIP code data from existing clients to determine where they were concentrated and where satellite centers would have the greatest impact.

The city’s Hilltop neighborhoods “rose to the top,” according to executive director Tammy Aupperle.

Jeremiah’s Place opened its Hilltop location in July and marked the milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 12.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Council’s new thrift store opened Aug. 17 in West Mifflin.

Call it serendipitous that the retail outlet is housed in a former Catholic church.

Beyond apparel, shoppers can peruse furniture and shelves stocked with glassware, dishes, lamps, small appliances, books and holiday decorations.

Little Italy Days in Bloomfield concluded on Aug. 16.

While the event draws around 100,000 people each year, locals are mixed about the direction it should take in the future.

The revered Westinghouse football coach is hard at work with his athletes preparing for their season-opening scrimmage against Erie at 8 p.m. Aug. 22.

The Nightshade Lounge in Dormont is the latest queer-owned sober establishment to open this year with a mission to foster belonging within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.

It joins the likes of The Soft Spot in Garfield, The Crow’s Nest in Dormont and The Shelf Love Society in Lawrenceville that all aim to offer safe, sober third spaces for customers, with accessibility in mind.
