Kennywood, Idlewild & Sandcastle TV Spots

It's another Throwback Thursday. PLUS... it's the first day of Summer! Nothing says summertime fun like Kennywood, Idlewild or Sandcastle.

Before these amusement parks were acquired by California based, Palace Entertainment in 2007, I directed & photographed dozens of TV campaigns. My friend, Brad Wucher was the agency creative director and writer on most of these ads. Brad wrote the memorable tag line, “You’ll wet your pants this summer at Kennywood.” For 20+ years, he and I spent many long, hot, summer days filming in the parks.

Henny Henninger, Andy Quinn and the late, Carl Hughes ruled the parks. They were great clients who were totally supportive of our crazy production ideas.

See how many of these TV spots you remember…

TBT - saw an article today about Dr. Andrew-Jaja, the singing doctor who delivers babies. We did a spot featuring him for AGH about 15 years ago. He had a few patients due to deliver that day, so we set up our cameras and the first woman ready to deliver was Lynn Swan's wife! The Swans graciously let us film Dr. Andrew-Jaja during the delivery!

I've received so many kind facebook comments, emails and phone calls regarding the passing of my former business partner, Paul Hartwick that I thought I'd share a few personal memories of Paul…

I got my private pilot's license in 1970 at the University of Florida. A year after Paul and I formed Hartwick/Przyborski Productions, I purchased an old 1967 Cessna 172. One day, Paul and I flew from Allegheny County Airport to Toledo for a pre-pro meeting at Hickory Farms of Ohio. It was a super clear, unlimited visibility, fall day. It was also the first time Paul had ever flown in a small plane. He loved the experience so much that he bought a used Cessna 177 in less than 10 days! It was the first time I heard of someone buying an airplane, then learning to fly.

Paul and I plus our crew of Pittsburgh regulars once travelled to Terry Bradshaw's farm, just outside Shreveport, Louisiana. We were shooting a commercial for Endicott-Johnson boots and Creamer Advertising. For 10 hours, we filmed Terry doing rough, tough, farm activities in his "EJ" boots. Late in the day, while the crew was wrapping out, Paul asked Terry to throw a few footballs. Paul was to run 35 feet straight ahead, cut right and catch the ball. Hartwick dropped a couple of Bradshaw's passes, then made the mistake of telling him that he wasn't throwing the ball hard enough. Paul caught Terry's next pass… but paid a price. The following morning his upper arm was black and blue.

Paul was into Civil War reenactments and on certain weekends, he literally transformed himself into a Union Army infantryman. In the early 80's, we were filming a commercial for Lincoln First Bank from Rochester, NY. Hutchins/Y&R was the ad agency. Our talent was an actor from New York who specialized in portraying Abraham Lincoln. In full makeup and costume, this 6' 4" guy was a dead ringer for Honest Abe. As soon as our shoot was over, Paul put on his Union Army uniform, grabbed his Springfield rifle and we headed to a vacant field next to TPC's studio. For a few minutes, I became "Matthew Brady" and took a very convincing photo of Lincoln shaking hands with one of his soldiers. Paul loved that picture.

We worked on a lot of TV projects, travelled a lot of miles and had a lot fun… As they say, Rest in Peace, Paul Hartwick.

Paul Hartwick 1946-2013

I was informed this afternoon that my former business partner and TV commercial director, Paul Hartwick had passed away at UPMC Hospital late Sunday afternoon.

Paul and I met while working at Television Production Center (TPC) in Pittsburgh. He had previously worked as an ad agency producer at Ketchum and W.B. Doner which gave him the ability to relate to art directors and writers. In 1975, Hartwick convinced me that we could make a living by starting a commercial production company.

We founded Hartwick/Przyborski Productions in 1975 and operated the company through 1987. During that period "H/P" produced literally hundreds of broadcast advertising commercials for clients and ad agencies across the U.S. We worked separately on most projects and as a team on major productions, especially those from our New York office. Many Pittsburgh crew people got their first film production experience with Hartwick/Przyborski and/or TPC.

Back in the mid-70's most film projects were actually edited on film. Then a print from the lab was transferred to videotape for TV station distribution. Kodak credited Paul and me as pioneers for shooting 35mm film specifically for editorial on videotape.

Paul Hartwick was an instrument rated, multi-engine pilot and an avid outdoorsman. He loved the woods, hunting, guns, and civil war re-enactments. Years ago, he dropped out of the commercial production business and moved to the Allegheny Forrest near Bradford, PA. Unfortunately, My last contact with Paul was over 10 years ago.

Paul Hartwick is survived by His wife, Mary and daughters, Jennifer & Justi. Mary informed me that his funeral would be private without public viewing or services.

44 years ago today (July 20, 1969) at just about 11PM EDT, Americans took our first step on the moon. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I was present for the launch of Apollo 11. As a 19 year-old, I was hired to take photos of Norelco TV cameras in-use by the networks. I won't bore you posting pictures of TV cameras, but I did find a few snapshots that I took that day at the Cape Kennedy press site. In 1969, Americans loved the thought of space travel. StarTrek was on prime-time TV. Celebrities would often attend launches as VIP guests of NASA and the USAF.

First, the undisputed king of late-night TV, Johnny Carson and side-kick, Ed McMahon. Carson could always make Ed laugh even when they weren't on-camera. I remember them being very sociable and talking with everyone at the press site. They had no "handlers" or "assistants". Note that Johnny is holding a cigarette with his coffee.

America's most popular anchorman, Walter Cronkite would never miss covering an important space launch for CBS. He was standing in line at one of the commissary trucks, talking to everyone when I shot this photo.

I was 6 ft. away from President Lyndon Johnson when I snapped this photo. There were no metal detectors or TSA screeners. All you needed to be where I was standing was a simple 2" X 3" press pass and a driver's license. Things were different back in 1969.

Most people (outside Brevard County, FL) have never heard this, but NASA had an informal association with a "witch" by the name of Sybil Leek. It's my understanding that she would offer her thoughts on "good days" and "bad days" related to important launch dates. Sybil was from England, but moved to the Melbourne Beach area, which is about 25 miles South of Cape Kennedy. I've personally attended 5 or 6 launches and she was always present. She passed away in 1982. (Look her up on Google…)

Today, the last remaining Saturn 5's, America's most powerful and most reliable space vehicle, have been turned into tourist attractions. The U.S. no longer has the ability to launch a person into space. We now pay the Russians $60+ million dollars to transport each American to the International Space Station… Glenn P.

Yesterday, 7-16-13 was the 44th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11, the first men on the moon. As a 19 year old, I was working as a freelance photographer, taking photos for Philips Broadcast Equipment Corp. At the same time, my late father was on the opposite side of the Cape Kennedy launch pad, filmming the launch for NASA. The photo shows dad with a 70mm Mitchell movie camera. The other photo is my actual press pass to get on the base. (All the movie cameras at the Cape were painted white to reflect the intense Florida sun.)

My good friend of 40 years, Terry Kulchar (aka "Tweeter") from NEP is currently building 4 of the world's most sophisticated and technologically equipped HDTV remote trucks. The 4 units work as an integrated TV production center and employ up to 25 Sony HD cameras and more electronics than I've ever seen in one place. Behind "Tweet" in this photo is a newly installed Calrec digital audio control console from Great Britain.
