Well, folks, it looks like Elf Lair Games will NOT be at Gary Con this year. This is heartbreaking, but I was shunted to a waiting list after having a presence there the past two years in a row. When I inquired why, I got a repsonse that:
1. had a lie in it (claiming Pick Up & Go Games made a special request for us to get a booth last year - that DID NOT HAPPEN, though I did collaborate with them the past two years)
2. Listed sugar-coated platitudes like "other companies that have never been here before deserve a chance." Read: "companies with bigger names that are more prestigious than you."
3. "We had to cut [more than] 10% due to changes in the guaranteed booth space for sponsorship tiers" Read: Other people with more money than you are being given tons of space, so it was nice knowing you, kid.
4. "Believe me, I WISH we could give you space based on your presence here before." No, no, you don't. If you did, you would.
5. "We know how important Gary Con is to small companies who need a chance...that's why we DO what we do." So...why am I on a waitlist, then?
6. "You're exactly the kind of retailer we WANT to see get a chance!" Really? THEN GIVE ME A BOOTH.
Then he had the gall to say he hopes I'll continue to come to the con. Anyway, I guess that's that. If I somehow get offered a booth, We may appear. Other than that, it's been fun.
I'm probably going to try to appear at PAGE in Philly in 2027 (I'll be there with Troll Lord Games in 2026). There's a local con or two here I'll look into. If I can work up to it, maybe Origins, but that's expensive.
I'm sorry to have to deliver this announcement. I always look forward to seeing everyone. Hopefully something changes. I'll keep you all posted.
