Pittsburgh's Fourth of July fireworks budget is about to quadruple 🎆

Council voted to move forward with accepting a $630,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, with $261,800 going toward fireworks. Combined with the city's existing contract, that brings this year's display budget to $350,000 — up from about $88,000.

The boost comes in time for the country's 250th anniversary, and just as Pittsburgh was named the #1 Fourth of July celebration in the country by USA Today readers.

County Council is moving forward with protections against sexual abuse for all inmates in our jail, regardless of gender identity. The proposed ordinance would keep these safeguards in place locally, even if federal rules change.

A proposed bill to require law enforcement to display visible identification while working in Allegheny County has hit a legal snag. County lawyers say federal law limits what can be enforced locally.

Do you think the measure should still move forward, even if it only applies to local officials?

Pittsburgh is keeping its interactive budget tool around for at least another year.

Council voted this week to move forward with a $13,000 extension for Balancing Act, the online platform that lets residents see exactly where their tax dollars go — down to the cent — and try out their own budget priorities by adding or cutting expenditures.

The city is also working on an in-house version of the tool to save money long-term.

Pittsburgh's building permit process is getting a closer look — at no cost to the city.

Council voted this week to move forward with a three-year partnership between the Department of Innovation and Performance and Johns Hopkins University.

Researchers will examine why applications get held up and how to make the process more consistent and equitable. Right now, it takes a week longer for people in low-income communities just to start a single-family home permit application.

While the NFL Draft weekend drew mixed reviews, but Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato says the prep work is what residents will actually benefit from long after the weekend.

In her April 28 quarterly address to County Council, she pointed to a county-wide cleanup that logged 40,800 volunteer hours and removed 7.3 million pounds of debris, including 53,384 tires. The Draft also created a deadline for permanent projects: the new Arts Landing, a renovated Market Square, Downtown's first playground, and new public restrooms.

Pittsburgh Public Schools just voted to expand religious exemptions to include 'moral beliefs' for opting out of certain lessons. Parents will now need to give specific reasons and get 3 weeks notice before potentially controversial topics. What do you think about these changes to our schools?

Pittsburgh's recycling routes are getting a major upgrade! Our DPW has been using paper binders from 2008 to guide recycling trucks. Now they're switching to modern route optimization software and in-vehicle navigation. This should mean more balanced routes and hopefully fewer missed pickups. Have you noticed issues with your recycling collection?

Pittsburgh City Council is moving forward with two more bills to limit ICE access to city property.
If passed, federal immigration enforcement would not be able to use city-owned property like parks and libraries as staging areas, enter non-public city property without a judicial warrant, or use public spaces for questioning and processing.

This builds on an amendment passed last month that prohibited city employees from cooperating with immigration enforcement. All three bills were sponsored by Council Member Deb Gross of Highland Park, who consulted with the Pittsburgh Hispanic Development Corporation while drafting them.

Violations could result in a $2,000 fine or termination from city employment. The bills do not prohibit immigration enforcement from operating in the city — that would violate federal law.

Final vote is scheduled for next week.

Pittsburgh's parks are getting a 10-year commitment from young volunteers 🌳

Council moved forward this week with a decade-long agreement between the Department of Public Works and the Student Conservation Association. Volunteers ages 14 to 35 will continue maintaining trails, planting trees, and removing invasive species across the city's parks.

This spring's focus is on growing Pittsburgh's tree canopy — and that matters more in some neighborhoods than others. The city's average canopy is 41%, but in some economically disadvantaged neighborhoods it drops below 20%. That's a real environmental equity issue, with direct effects on air quality, heat exposure, and quality of life.
