Hello, friends! The August poetry contest for The Writer's Room came and went, and unfortunately, I did not place or even make the top 10 this time around. 😔

The theme this month was "Unlikely Heroes" with bonus elements of secrets, plot twist, and existential dread.

But! Here is the entry I submitted. This one is a little "darker" than my usual Serena stuff, but with a hopeful ending, I think.

I based this on a personal philosophy of my own: that we never know how a simple kindness can impact a person... Although I'm not the best in large groups of people and often become overwhelmed and grumpy in crowds, I try to treat others with respect and kindness.

A Simple Gesture by Serena Faye

Black and white
A monotonous life
Empty
Cold
A robotic shell

Forced smiles
Programmed responses
Every day, the same
Going through the motions
Waiting for the end
Hoping for the end

But then she smiled
A random stranger
She held the door
A simple gesture
She said hello
Acknowledged the existence
Slowly fading away

A crack
A flash of color
A beacon
A moment
A feeling
Hope?

Another day
Less gray
One less scar
One less plan
Maybe tomorrow
Might actually come

One single moment
Fleeting to her
Normal, small
She never would know
The impact on
A broken person
Like me

I wrote this poem as a joke yesterday but thought I would share it here, too lol Enjoy! And keep reading to see why I wrote it. ✨️🤔

Donny loves poems
Because his mother does.
What say his father?
Nay, Donny hath not.
Immaculate conception.
A bot or a god?
A fine line, debated
He decides the fate
Of so many
But by his mother's hand
Deleted

A little backstory... Donny is our server bot in the Discord channel for The Writer's Room. He was programmed by one of our admins, Athravan, who is jokingly called his mother. Well, Ath also hosts the monthly poetry contests and has been really encouraging everyone to write poems... and she just rolled out a new quests feature with Donny where he now gives us daily, weekly, and monthly quests to do.

Well, a little suspiciously, a lot of his quests are to write poems 🤣 So my daily quest yesterday was to write a poem. Thus... the above, written for Donny and Athravan.

And guess what... I got my daily quest today... it's to write another poem! Ahhh! This time, I am to use weather, plants, animals, or landscape as a central image to write a poem. Shenanigans! 🤣🫠

Do you like poetry? I have never been much of a poet but good gosh, Athravan is doing her best to convert us all. Pretty soon we all will be having spoken word mic nights with finger snapping. 🎤 hehe

Whispers from the Bloom (Oath of Flame Book 1): The Writer's Room & Warren Flynn - Author

Whispers from the Bloom is a YA Fantasy novel that is in editing stages. I've been working on it for several years. It is the story of Amalia, an older teenager who begins to experience hallucinations and visions during The Midnight Bloom - a meteorological event that only takes place once every twelve years. Amalia's world is facing a mysterious curse known as The Sleep and now also a war with former ally and neighboring nation, Tosma. Somehow, Amalia can't shake the feeling everything is connected and she's the connection. Spurred by the voices in her visions, she sets out with her best friend, Samara, to discover a destiny with a time limit - when the Midnight Bloom ends, she'll forget everything unless she chooses to give up the life she's always known. Amalia must make a difficult choice... and choosing not to choose is the highest price of all.

The Alunari (Opalescence Book 1): RJ Casta - Author & K A Nerney

This is a YA/NA crossover book, probably more NA/upper YA than Whispers. Sona is the MC here and she is older, in her 20s. This story is much heavier on the romance, as well. Sona is part of an expedition team studying the ruins of an ancient civilization when she accidentally activates the writing on the ancient pillars. The next thing she knows, she's inside a world where everything has an internal glow - even the people. The beautiful, elven people. The world is known as Elun, she doesn't speak their language and she quickly discovers she is unwelcome here when she's thrown in jail and referred to as "alunari".

Creation Witches (Meridian Academy Book 1): C.Helen Author & Michael Cresta

Creation Witches is the story of Maya, a teenaged art study who is accepted to Meridian Academy of the Arts on a prestigious scholarship. She has always dreamed of attending this school and studying art here. When she arrives, its everything she always dreamed it would be. A small group of students, lead by the Headmistress, known as Creation Witches, fight against Shadow Art... twisted versions of discarded art that students have unknowingly created. Pastel Village Adventures: Emma Petitt - Author & Patrick J. Murphy III

Pastel Village Adventures is a catch all for my children's stories and my fun worlds. Serena Faye, Evie Moon, Emma Bloom and Milo Rose are characters here, along with their animal companions. The Mischieflings also reside here.

That's everything I have that has a title lol I have a few others that never even made it that far, like Nerine's story is just called "Untitled: Nerine's Tale" and my future illustrated children's book is just known as "cat fairies project"... I assume it will eventually need a better title lol

I bought a planner! 📒 Do you use a planner to help you keep track of your writing goals?

I'm not very good at this kind of thing, actually, so we'll see how far I get with it lol But I figured I would try it out.

I put just a few things in it so far.

I'm going to try and give myself more goals but this was just to start. I kept forgetting what the dates were for the monthly contests for The Writer's Room lol So now I have those written down, at least.

What do you think, will I keep up with it? Probably not lol But maybe I'll surprise myself. ✨️🤣

What are some good goals to add? I'm in an editing stage right now for my draft, re-reading my chapters, doing chapter summaries for myself, and trying to fix some of the most obvious issues.

Meow! It's International Cat Day! 🐈🐾

I love cats! If you've spent any amount of time on my page, you probably know this lol I have 8 of my own and then my writing persona, Serena Faye, has her own fictional cat, Cleo, who is based on my real-life cat, Jinx.

So today, I would like to make a heartfelt shout-out to my feline companions... Jinx, Mittens, Parker Moon, Caitlyn, Jayce, Vi, The Gray Stuff, and Terra. I love you all so very much! I am proud to call myself a crazy cat lady.

Also, in remembrance of some of my departed, but never forgotten... Pepsi, Blackie, Christmas, Alex, Kokonoe, Sam, Andrew, and Smokey. 🌈🩷 I miss you guys... You will always have a place in my heart. New cats that come into my life will never replace you... My heart simply grows to allow more love in.

Please share your kitty pictures! Let's honor our purrfect pets today.

Give all of your cats an extra chin scratch from me, too! Or right behind the ears, whichever is their favorite spot.
