Payday Report

Payday Report A crowdfunded labor publication founded by Mike Elk. Worker-funded coverage of . He is co-author of the book We Are Wisconsin.

Founded by Mike with his NLRB settlement from being illegaly fired for union organizing at POLITICO. A native of the East End of Pittsburgh, Mike Elk is a member of the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild. He also writes for The Guardian and lives in Louisville, Kentucky. He co-founded Payday Report with his NLRB settlement from being illegally fired for union organizing at POLITICO. As a pioneer

ing leader in the digital media unionization movement, he has been profiled by NPR, The Washington Post, Newsweek, and Pacific Standard. As an investigative reporter, Mike Elk’s work has been featured everywhere from the front page of The New York Times to being debated by Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg on ABC’s The View. His work was credited by the Obama Administration for helping lead to the end of the use of the subminimum wage for disabled workers and for securing a massive pay raise for the domestic violence survivor advocates on 48 Army bases across the country. Speaking of his reporting covering the lockout of Honeywell uranium workers, Daily Show Co-Creator Lizz Winstead said, “Mike Elk is the new John Wayne. I believe he is the real Matt Taibbi.”

At age 22, his first job was working as a field staffer for President Obama’s campaign in rural Western Pennsylvania. Afterward, he followed the president to Washington, D.C., where he heeded the President’s call to his young staffers to hold him accountable and became a labor reporter. He spent all eight years of the Obama Administration based out of Washington, D.C., crisscrossing the country and visiting more than 30 states, while covering strikes, lockouts, and tragic workplace deaths. He has worked as a workplace safety expert for MSNBC, as an investigative reporter for In These Times Magazine, and has also written for The New York Times, Washington Post, and Reuters. At the age of 28, he rose to be the senior labor reporter on the largest labor desk in the country when he co-founded POLITICO’s labor desk. After being illegally fired for union organizing at POLITICO, Mike used his NLRB settlement money to move to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to found Payday Report

As the son of UE Director of Organization Gene Elk, he prefers to hide the fact that he attended a university as elite as Bucknell on a full scholarship. During college, he spent a year half in Brasil, where he covered the drug war and the landless workers' movement. He speaks Portuguese mainly just when signing Tom Jobim these days. Elk lives in Louisville, Kentucky and drives over 25,000 miles a year all over the South. When Mike isn’t on the road reporting on workers, he can be found listening to Sharon Jones, cooking salmon, and talking about the Civil War. He can be reached at [email protected] or on twitter .

Earlier today, an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal cited some of Payday's reporting on the UAW scandal. (See our story "UAW Prez Threatened to "Slit the Throats" of Critics as He Pushed No-Bid Contracts with DC Firms".)

The op-ed was written by union busters at the Center for Union Facts. Obviously, we do not support union busters and believe that they are manipulating the story for reasons intended to stop autoworkers from organizing the South.

However, the op-ed does show that this will be a national story, but the left media isn't covering it. If we on the left do not cover this stuff, then it will only be covered by the corporate media, which, in places like the Wall Street Journal, Detroit Free Press, and Auto News, are already covering it.

With open union elections set to be held in the UAW next year, this story will likely get even more national attention, which is why we need worker-funded media like Payday to tell the story from the perspective of trade unionist trying to deal with it. Already, as Payday reported on Friday, the AFL-CIO has declined to grant the UAW's proposal to remove UAW Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock from the AFL-CIO's Executive Council.

In coming days and week, Payday will have more stories and we challenge the left media to cover this honestly from a union democracy perspective. At Payday, we have done major work that is getting lots of attention, but if our allies in the left media ignore it, our scoops will be spun for anti-union reasons.

We need your support and assistance to ensure that this story is told from the perspective of actual autoworkers.

Donate to help us cover the perspectives of union democracy activists.

UAW Prez Shawn Fain told a room of 300 UAW staff that he would "slit the fu***ng throats" of anyone who crossed his top aides.

Under the federal consent decree, UAW is required to solict bids from three contractors before signing deals.

When UAW Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock blocked a no-bid contract for $500K w/ a DC Firm run by Biden staffers for billboards in Chattanooga, he removed her.

Total show trial where she didn't know the charges before they were advanced.

In late 2023, in a meeting with over 300 UAW staffers present, UAW President Shawn Fain asked his half-dozen top staffers, including UAW Chief of Staff Chris Brooks and UAW Communications Director Jonah Furman, to go to the front of the room. He then pointed to them and declared, “If

After 2 years of work, I can't believe that I'm finally heading up to the present this piece at the Baseball Hall of Fame's annual conference.

In September of 1945, there was a GI World Series at Hitler's Nuremberg Stadium that featured more All-Stars and future Hall of Famers than the 45 World Series between the Cubs and Tigers.

The winning team was captained by a Jewish Communist Sam Nahem, who picked two Negro League legends and Normandy combat Veterans Willard Brown and Leon Day, both of whom would later be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The other team was captained by a good old boy the Cardinal's Harry "the Hat" Walker, who would lead an attempt to call a white players' strike to prevent the integration of baseball.

The story of the GI World Series at Nuremberg exemplifies how the Double V campaign was able to counter fascism and racism at home & abroad during World War Two.

I hope this Memorial Day that everyone reads it.

The following research was first presented at the National Baseball Hall of Fame by Emmy-nominated labor reporter Mike Elk as part of the 36th annual Symposium on Baseball and American Culture. It is the result of more than two years of work. The 1945 GI World Series in Hitler’s

BREAKING: New Jersey Transit rail operators have gone on strike.

The strike, which has the backing of NJ Gov Phil Murphy, will affect 350,000 commuters.

NJ Transit operators say they want to be afford to live in the communities that they serve

Today, New Jersey transit engineers went on a historic strike, affecting more than 350,000 commuters. The workers, members of BLET, who have been without a union contract since 2019, are demanding pay raises that would allow them to live in the areas they serve. In March, their union, the

IMPACT - For more than 2 years, the UAW blocked the release of UAW executive board meeting minutes.

Then, Payday did an exposé on it & now the union is going to release them.

In July of 2023, four months into UAW President Shawn Fain's first term, the UAW's Public Review Board ruled on an appeal by retired UAW member Frank Goeddeke that the UAW must release all minutes of its International Executive Board (IEB) meetings. Under the UAW's constitution, the union is require...

PITTSBURGH, PA. - Marching through the streets of Pittsburgh, it was the largest crowd that I have seen on May Day in my decade of covering them in Pittsburgh. The protest came in the wake of deadly storms that left more than 200,000 in Pittsburgh without power. Miracle Jones,

Reporters all over Pittsburgh have been talking about death of Michael Fuoco

Strangely, no obituaries were written about the man the NYT called “the Harvey Weinstein of Pittsburgh”

Fuoco may be dead, but his network of complicity is still alive in Pittsburgh's media world as people refuse to talk about his death.

PITTSBURGH, PA - On Friday, my phone started blowing up with texts from local reporters about the death of infamous Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Michael Fuoco, who was found dead in his home last Thursday. It was unclear why he died: toxicology tests are still being performed on Fuoco, who strug...

Experts say that following an abuser's death, that is crucial to give an account of their abuse to help with the recovery process of survivors.
