We're wrapping up the daily Spartan Up zoom chats this week. I'll be on today at 2:00 est to talk about what over 500 episodes of Spartan Up have taught me about production, podcasting AND resilience and tactics. Bring questions!

Janine Shepherd was headed to a place on her country's Olympic team when she was hit by a truck. Today she is a resilience coach best known for her Ted talk "A Broken Body Isn't a Broken Person." Joe De Sena interviewed her for Spartan Up Podcast. She talked about Covid times and told us that the 6 months she spent in a body cast were painful but rich with opportunities for growth. She also gave a few practical suggestions for those who are struggling with motivation right now:
1. Give yourself a break if you need one.
2. Try a gratitude practice in the morning (rather than evening) with a gratitude practice, it will prime you for the day.
3. Ask yourself (or your kids or coworkers) "what would make today great?"
4. Hope is a cognitive skill - it consists of goals, pathway and agency.

BONUS - at the end of the episode the Spartan Up hosts, Joe De Sena, Col. Nye, Sefra the Seedhuntress, Johnny Waite and Dr. Lara Pence talk about what they learned from their mothers.

You may face adversity that’s beyond your control, but it doesn’t have to control your destiny! When Logan injured his arm at age 13 he asked his mom “what if I lose my arm?” Her answer, “it’s only an arm.” He did lose the arm, but those words have guided him ever since. Today Logan runs the Adaptive Training Academy and is a man on a mission. He’s also the world’s strongest one-armed man. His interview with Joe De Sena is today’s Spartan Up podcast episode.

One of the things I committed to doing for myself about a month ago is posting a daily journal on my blog. As someone whose job has been helping others express their thoughts I decided to invest some time in my own voice. I've always admired still photographers and writers so I’m honored that my "open letter" is featured on the Spartan Life site.

Join us today at 2:00 EST for a conversation with Caspar Craven. Caspar is no stranger to living and working in self isolation. He’s spent three years of his life at sea - two of which were with his wife and 3 kids under the age of ten. On that voyage, he ran three businesses whilst also sailing the world and homeschooling. He’ll share the best ideas that he found worked to keep both the work and home teams thriving.

I'm still waiting for the "pause." The primary motivation behind Spartan Up podcast was never the money. Don't misunderstand, the work is what feeds and houses my family, but day to day when I'm up against deadlines it's not the check that drives me. It's our audience. It's our message. And it's the creative desire to make something great. So even though things are super tight right now, we're doubling down. We're finding ways to keep the show going and we're growing deeper connections with our virtual community with daily zoom sessions open to our listeners that feature past podcast guests.
-
Still I wanted to take advantage of the re-set, the opportunity to reflect and grow, that I'm hearing so many of you experience - so April 27th I challenged myself to keep a daily photo journal. What are you learning or trying during this massive shift?

I’m not sure exactly how to put this. Right now things are tough, much tougher for some than others. Medical workers, the sick, those who live paycheck to paycheck have it harder than most of us who are checking in on LinkedIn. Still - Dan Crowley, 98 year old Bataan Death March WW2 Pow survivor, has an important message. Let him be a role model: endure, laugh, make the most out of life! His story and wisdom feel especially important right now, so we republished his Spartan Up podcast interview with a new open and a message from Joe De Sena at the end of the Spartan Up episode.

This Double Amputee Holds the World Marathon Record! Marko Cheseto

One of my all-time favorite podcast guests is Marko Cheseto. He has an amazing story, but what makes him a favorite is his happiness. Growing up in a tiny village in Kenya he takes nothing for granted. Marko is currently the fastest double amputee in the world! He came to Alaska on a running scholarship and lost both legs to frostbite. But please, don't let that stop you from listening. I promise if you listen to the end you will feel better, stronger and happier for it.

There are just now over 900,000 podcasts. Are podcasts becoming the new “blog” in audio form?

It’s a good way to think about it. There’s a range in podcasts just like there is in test based websites - everything from the New York Times, to Vice, to the neighbor who thought he might write about driveway maintenance but stopped after one post.

Starting in 2007 there was this crazy multi-day endurance race in Pittsfield, Vermont called "The Death Race." It was designed to challenge athletes mentally AND physically. It sounded kind of nuts - tactics that intentionally FRUSTRATED the racers like changes in plans, repetitive mindless tasks, even starting 12 hours earlier than racers expected. The craziest thing is that people LOVED it. For the racers, it tapped into something powerful and became a transformational event in many lives!
🎧
Today we launched a new podcast "the Spartan Death Race Podcast."

Week one features Athena Ojeda and hosts Yancy Culp and Don Devaney. Thank Carrie Caulfield Arick for your excellent editing work!

TODAY on Spartan Up: The first ever female coach in the NFL, Dr. Jen Welter, had no road map to follow. What she had was a determination to step up to each challenge as it came and perform at her best. "It always stuck in my head that people said football was the final frontier for women in sports, so I had this belief - if we could change football we could change the world!"
-
For those who question the value of diversity she sets the record straight - if every player on the team were Tom Brady, the team would lose. A team needs every kind of player to succeed.

What’s scary for you is not what’s scary for others. There’s no absolute measure. Legendary runner Kara Goucher has established a reputation as a rock star runner, an Olympian, 3rd at the Boston Marathon. In this weeks Spartan Up she explains that for her trying Trail running was a courageous leap. She had to be willing to go from the front to the back of the pack ... for now.

One of my favorite lessons - you need to be willing to be bad at something to get good at it.

What are you afraid of? How is it holding you back?

⛷Are you thinking about career transition? Facebook says this was 6 years ago, but it seems like a lifetime. This was my last network ski skoot, a signpost on a gradual career shift.

☀️ On a sunny day it was the best job in the world!

❄️ On the other days it made for great stories and comradarie.

🎥What hasn’t changed? I’m still telling stories that stick. Good communication is not about the tools or the location. It’s about seeing the story and the best way to tell it. Think about how you can bring your skills and wisdom along?

Innovation Isn’t an Idea Problem

Innovation isn't an "idea" problem. When most organizations try to increase innovation, they start from the assumption: “we need more ideas,” but the problem is rarely a lack of ideas. It's more often the lack of an organization's courage to commit to them. Real innovation requires risk tolerance.

Data is a great tool, but data can't reflect what hasn't yet been tried. Data can't predict innovative success.

I'm fortunate that Spartan is a fast-growing company willing to take risks on projects I've been able to run with: YouTube webisodes in 2012, our podcast in 2014, World MediaFest in 2019, and now a new wellness podcaster event coming to Endurancecon this summer!

In this photo Marko Cheseto, a Kenyan runner who lost both legs to frostbite while on a running scholarship in Alaska and now holds the record for the worlds fastest marathon by a double amputee, and Shay Eskew who wrote "What the Fire Ignited" about the journey that began when he was accidentally lit on fire and severely burned at age 8 and continues to this day with over 37 painful surgeries to date and a hobby as a top 1% Iron Man competitor.
