Does anyone have an extra copy of Spence’s hymnals “Heavenly Hymns” and “Praises to the Lord”? I had some reach out looking for these two books and I only have single copies of these two.

I wanted to go ahead and let everyone know about an upcoming project I have in the works. There’s no firm timeline, but the earliest I would have this completed is mid to late 2026.

I am working on a hymnal that the majority of which will be dedicated to the legacy of W. L. Spence. All the songs that Bro. Spence wrote, co-wrote, composed, harmonized, or originally published will be compiled into this book. Additionally, I have found multiple songs that Spence wrote and composed but were not included in his own published hymnals that will be included. Fittingly, the hymnal will be called “Singing On”, named after his first published song as well as one of the hymnals he published.

Another large part of the book is compiling some of the best songs from each of 10 hymnals he published. I will try to focus on songs that haven’t been published already by myself or Bro. Leland Fleming. If you have any specific songs that fit the bill that you would like to see, please reach out to me or comment on this post. Some old classics will be used, some that I love but also some that Spence frequently used in his books.

The last part of the book will be filled with newer material or old songs that aren’t commonly seen. Some modern songs or modern arrangements of old songs will be included. I have a few originals I would like to include, and I would like to include songs that are written by those in the church. If you or someone you know is writing music that would be fitting for congregational worship, please reach out to me. I would love to include as many of those songs as possible.

I plan on this book containing at least 300 songs total. Unlike the first book, PowerPoint slides are going to be completed at the time the book is ready.

Please share this post if you feel like it may reach someone who would be interested in contributing material.

Thank you and God bless!

I have 10 complete songbooks that W. L. Spence compiled. Does anyone know of any other books he put together beside the ones in this list?

1) Divine Praises (1957)
2) Heavenly Hymns (1958)
3) Joyful Melodies (1960)
4) Melodies of Love (1962)
5) Christian Love (1965)
6) Singing On (1970)
7) Praise Ye the Lord (1974)
8) Songs of Abiding Love (1977)
9) Songs We Love (1983)
10) Praises to the Lord (1986)

Also, I have come across one song he wrote that is not included in any of the songbooks he put together. Is anyone aware of other songs he might have wrote that he did not include in his books?

Since I will be finishing the slides for the songbook soon, it would be helpful to get an idea of who all would be interested in purchasing the slides for the book. It will help me decide the best way to proceed for licensing purposes. If you or your congregation would be interested, please let me know either by messaging me or by commenting on the post. Thank you and God bless!

Does anyone have a complete copy of “Divine Praises” they’d be willing to part with? This was compiled by W. L. Spence and I believe this might have been his first book. My copy is water damaged and the back cover is missing. I also don’t know how many songs I’m missing from the end. My copy has up to song no. 209 “Sweet Paradise”.

Happy Monday!

What’s everybody’s favorite song from the book? And what’s a song you want to see in a songbook/hymnal that you haven’t?

I hope everyone has a good week and God bless!

Thank you to everyone who has supported “Rejoice & Sing”. I truly enjoyed compiling it and appreciate all the guidance that Leland Fleming offered in navigating the process. Really, without his efforts, this book probably wouldn’t have happened. Of course, without bro. W. L. Spence’s songbooks and his work, who knows if Leland’s books would have happened.

Of those who have used or own a copy of the book, what old song have you missed the most? And what song that’s new or new to you has been a stand-out? The old songs I missed the most were “Hide Thou Me” & “God’s Mercy and Love”. Those have always been favorites of mine, and a big motivation to undertake this project so that we could sing them again. I’m not even sure I could pick my favorite “new” song because it seems to change so often. For now, I’ll say “Hear My Cry” but “Yahweh” is another that’s really good. I’d love to hear what others think.

I’ve attached an index for reference if you don’t have a book handy. If you don’t own a copy, they are only $8 plus tax. Help me unload them so there can be future projects. And if you are waiting for the PowerPoints, why wait to get a head start on familiarizing yourself with the book?

I look forward to everybody’s responses. God bless!
