A political storm appears to be brewing in Busia County as several MPs from the region, despite seemingly backing President William Ruto’s “Tutam” re-election bid, increasingly appear to be distancing themselves from Governor Paul Otuoma and gravitating towards gubernatorial aspirant Arthur Osiya.

The latest to openly criticise Otuoma is Matayos MP Geoffrey Odanga, who accused the governor of failing to deliver meaningful development to residents during his time in office.

His remarks come barely a fortnight after Butula MP Joseph Oyula also launched a scathing attack on the governor, accusing his administration of mismanaging county resources.

Oyula claimed that despite Busia County receiving more than KSh 55 billion from the national government, the most visible development in his constituency was the construction of only six single-classroom ECDE facilities.

Rigathi Gachagua: “I know there is a small challenge back home, with supporters of Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino trading barbs and insulting each other. I placed a call to Edwin Sifuna from here and had a long conversation with him. I did the same with Babu Owino.

I told them, ‘Look here, you young guys, your movement is being infiltrated by William Ruto and the National Intelligence Service, and your supporters are falling for it. The two of you must meet very quickly and tell your supporters not to fall into that trap of infiltration.’

The state has invested heavily in dividing them because the President is so scared of these young leaders. After the meeting that took place at Jacaranda and through the streets of Nairobi, there was panic.

The National Security Council was convened, and the National Intelligence Service was instructed to devise ways and means of creating divisions within Linda Mwananchi.

I have briefed Edwin Sifuna and spoken to Babu Owino, and they agree with me that they must do whatever it takes. In fact, I have asked Senator John Methu to join them so that they can talk, discuss the issue and determine how quickly they can jointly address their supporters, call them to order and inform them that the state is trying to divide Linda Mwananchi.

That would be catastrophic for the country because Linda Mwananchi will play a significant role when we converge as a country. We do not want that movement divided.

Again, I have seen the issue taking a tribal dimension, which I do not like, where Luo and Luhya supporters have started trading insults. That is exactly what William Ruto wants: divide and rule. He does not want the Luhya and Luo communities to be united.

I have told Sifuna and Babu, ‘Please, as leaders from those communities, do not fall into that trap. You must tell your supporters not to do so because, if you do, William Ruto will be the beneficiary. He will succeed in pitting the Luo against the Luhya.’”
