These statistics are surprising!
Canada is approaching a major milestone in its controversial Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program.
The policy, first legalized in 2016, allows doctors or nurse practitioners to help eligible patients end their lives under strict medical guidelines. Since then, the program has grown rapidly across the country.
Government data shows more than 76,000 Canadians had used MAID by the end of 2024, and with roughly 16,000 cases in 2024 alone, the total is projected to pass 100,000 deaths sometime in 2026, just before the program’s 10-year anniversary.
Today, assisted deaths account for about 5% of all deaths in Canada, making the country one of the world leaders in legally assisted dying.
Supporters say the program provides dignity and choice at the end of life, while critics argue it raises serious ethical questions about how societies care for the sick and vulnerable.
