FACT FRIDAY 🤔 Did you notice the director/producer of Silent Cries make an appearance in the documentary? He's researching on the computer, jotting down notes near the end with his memoir and CHD story picture book on the table. In 1999, Phillip Wolf's first child was touched by CHD - Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Read more about why Wolf created the Silent Cries documentary below:

[Phillip Wolf] “Silent Cries to me really has a double meaning. The first being something personal to me when my son, Jeremiah, was born. He had to be resuscitated immediately after birth then ventilated as his lungs were too weak to function on their own due to his heart defect. He was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. He was heavily sedated and taken into surgery at twelve hours old to complete the first of a three-staged surgical procedure, which the first being the Norwood. Later, he needed a tracheostomy, so for the remainder of his life, Patience and I never heard him cry; it was more of heavy air flow that we could hear mostly coming from the ventilator whenever he cried and sometimes laughed.

The second meaning behind Silent Cries goes out to all the families who may be afraid, or not ready to share their stories or experiences regarding what goes on while taking care of their baby born with a CHD. I wanted to help them be that voice, to express feelings and emotions to the general public when it comes to caring for a baby with a CHD; whether the child is living in the hospital, or he/she is being cared for at home. Education and awareness are what I believe are key factors in getting the word out to those who may have never heard of congenital heart defects, let alone the acronym, CHD.

Based on our experience with Jeremiah, Patience and I felt somewhat left in the dark from the beginning. We had never heard of CHD and didn’t know what to expect once Jeremiah was born. We were suddenly making life changing decisions every minute of every day. As young new parents then (me 25 and Patience 23), we had no idea where to turn to for help except the staff at the hospital. Parenthood was coming later for us; we had become little nurses, educating ourselves by observing and assisting the hospital staff in the care for Jeremiah.

It would be several years later when technology started progressing for CHDs. Unfortunately, it was too late for us. Jeremiah would need a heart transplant, but he got too sick too fast and was not a candidate for a new heart when we were flown from Dallas, Texas to Loma Linda, California for the heart transplant evaluation. We were preparing to live and work in California until our son would've received the new heart. We had no family with us but each other while in California when Jeremiah had passed a few days after arrival; it was surreal and very scary.

After the grieving process kind of settled, I woke up one day and felt other families whose child would be touched by a CHD needed to be made aware of this #1 birth defect. I didn’t want to see families struggle or be unaware of CHD in the way Patience and I did. So, I self-published a memoir in 2002 and went into detail about our experiences in caring for Jeremiah. Around 2010, one of my fellow classmates from film school had approached me with the idea of making my story into a movie. I don’t remember if he had read my book and it touched him in some way, or I was always talking about Jeremiah in general conversations. I do know I used a lot of reference to CHDs in my video projects for school, so that could have contributed to his approach.

I had done some previous work on other video projects with another classmate, Kevin Johnson. He and I began producing the short film, “Silent Cries” pro bono. The 20-minute film was focused on the Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome defect since I knew more about that particular CHD than any others. The pilot episode was to show audiences what we wanted to produce as a feature film, and we needed funds for equipment rental, crew fees, travel fees, etc. in order to make it happen. We released the short film to festivals in 2012, and it was picked up and screened in Los Angeles, CA and won first place in the Health category during the Awareness Film Festival (Heal One World).

Kevin and I quickly began working on producing the feature film, but on a very low budget. We were struggling to fund the project in order to move forward. It would be in 2014 when Nicole Vickery discovered our project on Indiegogo (a crowdfunding platform) and wanted to join the team to help see the film through. Thus, Silent Cries: Breaking Through CHD Awareness began a new phase in pre-production. We took “Silent Cries” through three different concepts, several different titles, and a lot of sleepless nights to get to where we are today, a dream that has finally become a reality.

This has all been an experience producing a feature-length documentary regarding CHDs. My team and I continued to educate ourselves about CHDs throughout the making of the film. Yes, we had a lot of set-backs, sleepless nights, frustrations, and blood, sweat and tears poured into this project, but it was all worth it.”
