On this day, September 6, 1927. Here's a fun one. Most amusement parks in the 1920s were built by private companies looking to make money. Westchester County did it differently. On September 6, 1927, more than 1,000 workers broke ground on Rye Playland, the country's first fully planned amusement park, and the county has owned it ever since. What's your favorite Playland memory?

On this day, September 4, 2012. I have to tell you about this one. The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester opened in 1926 as a Vaudeville and movie palace, selling out all 2,000 seats on opening night. By the early 1970s it had become one of the country's legendary rock venues, with Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead both playing there. Jerry Garcia once said there were only two real theaters in the country, the Fillmore East and the Capitol. A curfew on live music helped end that era, and the building spent the next few decades reinventing itself, from a catering hall to a surprise David Bowie show in 1997 after the Rolling Stones had to cancel. A full restoration finally brought it back for good on September 4, 2012, with a surprise, sold-out Bob Dylan show, and it's been one of Westchester's real concert rooms ever since. Westchester remembers 9/11 by showing up for each other. Volunteer New York!'s Days of Service run September 8 through 11 this year, with volunteers packing 50,000 meals for local families, assembling hygiene kits, writing thank you cards for deployed service members, and giving blood at the County Center drive.

The biggest hub is at the Westchester County Center in White Plains on September 10, and the signature meal pack is at Monroe University in New Rochelle on September 11. Registration is open to individuals, families, students and work groups at volunteernewyork.org/serve.

Westchester has a country fair that's 102 years old, and it exists because a guy named Chester Hyatt wouldn't stop bragging about his potatoes.

Hyatt was a member of the Yorktown Grange, a farmers group whose members kept arguing over who grew the best vegetables. In 1924 he said fine, let's settle this in public. The first Yorktown Grange Fair ran that October, and they've been judging vegetables, flowers, needlework, baking, photography, livestock and poultry ever since.

The first hour of every day is a quiet hour with no loud noises, so people with special needs can enjoy the fair too. The whole thing is run by volunteers, and the money goes to local charities and service groups.

The 102nd fair runs September 11, 12 and 13 at 99 Moseman Road in Yorktown Heights. $15 gets your whole car in. This year's theme is Goats, Games and Good Times — a name that could describe basically any Westchester weekend.

The fair's history was written up by Eileen and Jim Seaboldt on the Grange's own site, and that's where most of this came from.

Okay, Mariano Rivera has a hot sauce line and I need everyone to know about it.

It is called Mo's Heat, it is all habanero, and the three sauces are named The Cutter, The Curve and The Sinker. Naming your hot sauce after your own pitches is an incredible thing to be able to do. Most of us do not have that option.

Here is the Westchester part. On Tuesday, September 8 he is bringing it to Walter's Hot Dogs in Mamaroneck. They are putting his sauce on their split grilled frank and calling it the Mo's Heat hot dog. 937 Palmer Ave, 4:30 to 6:30, and a three pack of Mo's Heat gets you a photo with him.

Blog is in the comments, and it has the detail I genuinely did not see coming, which is what the federal government has to say about that little pagoda.

So what is your Walter's order, and are you brave enough to put The Cutter on it?

I ranked almost every ride at Playland, and before anybody comes for me, this is my personal list 😂

Going back felt nostalgic and brand new at the same time. It was genuinely great seeing so many more rides open than previous years, and they’ve continued opening more since I filmed this, including Scorpios!

As a lifelong Westchester resident, I’m really excited to see the County running the park again. It feels like Playland is moving forward in a positive direction. If you haven't been yet this season, your last chance is before September 13th!
