1,071 miles planned, but rain, traffic and my motorcycle breakdown had other ideas. This is what long distance motorcycle travel really looks like… challenges and figuring them out.

I left Florida on a rented Harley-Davidson Street Glide with one goal: point the bike west and start an epic cross-country motorcycle trip to Las Vegas, Sturgis, and beyond.

Day 1 had other plans.

Just TWO gas stops into the ride, the bike broke down. Thankfully, EAGLERIDER Rentals & Tours and Gainesville Harley-Davidson jumped into action, got me and the bike picked up, diagnosed and fixed the problem and had me back on the road in about four hours.

From there? Florida traffic, thunderstorms, more rain, the George C. Wallace Tunnel in Mobile, Alabama, and eventually a three-hour storm through Mississippi that completely killed my original plan of completing another Iron Butt ride.

I finally called it after a little over 800 miles and found a hotel room in Hattiesburg, Mississippi... barely.

Not exactly the Day 1 I planned, but sometimes the best motorcycle trips are the ones that go completely off script.

The road to STURGIS 2026 starts here… and this time I’m doing it on a rental Harley-Davidson Street Glide.

Before beginning my roughly 2,700-mile solo motorcycle ride from South Florida to Las Vegas to meet the Moto Girls, I had a few stops to make. First, I rode down to Pompano Beach, Florida to finally meet custom motorcycle builder Stan Henne and get a look inside his shop at some of the wild custom motorcycles he’s been building.

From there, I headed to EagleRider in Miami to pick up the bike.

Renting a motorcycle for a long-distance trip definitely has its advantages but also a few compromises… including possibly the worst handlebar setup I’ve ever ridden. 😂
