Nay sayers said iPads were only a "consumable" product. But developers stepped up, creating productive apps and put those critiques to shame. Now apps like Affinity Photo for iPad - takes the shame to a whole 'nother level.

Affinity Photo for iPad was featured in Apple's conference earlier this year when they were demonstrating their new iPads. Everyone at the conference, online, and afterwards were all talking about the photo editing app almost as much as the new iPads.

Affinity also has software for Mac and PC desktop units, as well as PC mobile. We've been watching for this app and will be purchasing our own today! GET YOURS!

If you have an iOS based device - you need to get Plotagraph. It's just too cool.
It's normally $5 but it's free until January 15th, 2018. (It might also be available for Android)

For iOS - you first need to have the "Apple Store" app on your device. Open the app, make sure to stay on the page that opens, "Discover" and go to the bottom where you'll see the offer, and follow the steps that ultimately have you redeem the code through iTunes on your device.

Admittedly, you may run into problems where you receive an "invalid code" error. Don't worry. Be sure to take a screen shot, and/or write the number down. (screen shots best) Get on Apple's support and get into any area of iTunes that allows you to do a live chat and speak with a representative.

Have you ever had a problem with PRINT SIZE and the actual ASPECT RATIO your digital camera exports? Maybe, you're not even aware there's a problem, and that it's actually been going on for nearly twenty years already?? Some believe it's money manipulation.... some.... a plot or conspiracy.

Are you doing your own prints, like say... at a Target, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Costco... or where ever there's digital photo printing service?

You'll want to watch for an upcoming series of helps, tips, hacks, and tricks focusing on this problem. Also, I'll be helping with selecting everything from your print, matt, and frame size - to finding what aspect ratio your camera shoots, and what ratio you may actually want to choose if possible.

Abandoned ... found.
Old style barn. In searching for autumn scenes that always seem to come and go so quickly I came upon an apple and nut orchard. After speaking with one of the farm hands led me to meet the land owners a few weeks later. They allowed me to film one of their barns on the property and this was one quick image I took with my iPhone.

There's still a little more time to capture fall's beautiful colors. Find them wherever you can, whether by taking a drive and getting lost, or right in your own back yard!

Lan Su Chinese Garden

Visit Lan Su Chinese Garden for free. Closed today for the expected winter storm, but you can still visit during their last three days. Instead of an entry fee, bring some non-perishable food goods that will benefit The Oregon Food Bank. They have several different rooms with different activities, a guided tour, and be sure to check their small tea house. The garden is still very much alive during winter, and takes on a whole different look, great to relax while photographing. Not to mention - it's a lot less crowded! Film, cinematography and the "darkroom" will always as exist as a fine art. But to any digital photographer; pro, intermediate, or hobbyist - our darkroom, as it once was, no longer exists.

Just a little north of Portland is a hidden photography gem I've come to really enjoy and appreciate, not only for hidden surprises around every corner to photograph, but also being able to breath, relax and safely get lost in wilderness that's right out our back door.

Check out Ridgefield's Wildlife refuge that offers a driving tour as well as a beautiful 1.1 mile walk within the center of the refuge. Just be sure to take some bug spray. It's not bad, just some of the shady spots. Take a look a few photos I submitted for this year's photo contest. I wish I could have taken more and better ones.

YES... there IS a right way and wrong way to shoot video on your smart phone.

Orientation for photography is subjective, however, there is ONLY ONE way to shoot video. The three images seen below are a representation of two things;
(1) Showing how someone who starts filming the wrong way and then tries to correct the framing 'while' shooting - simply doesn't work.
(2) See how the three images combined, look like a film strip? What's wrong? Have you ever seen a film strip with tall images? NO! One direction is called "landscape" and the other... well... it's just called WRONG! Video is a "landscape" medium.

There's even a nice little rhyme I'll share later that will help you remember which way to hold your phone for video. For now - this article will give insights on how to shoot video with your phone.

2016 Free Admission Days In National Parks

PHOTO TIP: you can use no matter where you're at in the U.S. We have incredibly, natural & beautiful resources to photograph in our own national parks, which offer several free days throughout the year, some of which are right now!

If you already didn't know, Aug. 25 - 28, from coast to coast National Parks Service is celebrating 100 years of service; planning celebrations on what's also being called Founders Day. Not all national parks charge for passes or entry fees, but of the 124 that do, they'll also be providing free access during this time.

If you don't have a national park near you, consider our country's National Wildlife Refuge system. Some of our parks cross-share entry passes with refuge entry. Be sure to check.
