Portland exceeds goal for COVID-19-safe shelter beds this winter
With a freezing winter ahead, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and the Joint Office of Homeless Services has created 365 COVID-19-safe shelter beds for the homeless. Each sleeping pod is a 64-square feet shelter, insulated and heated. At a time when government help is needed more than ever, this provides a solution for the Portland homeless community for the upcoming winter months.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler had a goal of making 300 COVID-19-safe shelter beds available this winter. On Friday, the city announced that they have exceeded that number.
