The knock came at precisely 3:12 p.m. It wasnât forceful, but it was deliberateâsharp and unwavering. Mark Weston, seated at his laptop, paused mid-typing. The sound cut through the quiet of his apartment like a sudden gust of wind.
He hadnât been expecting any visitors.

Reluctantly, he opened it.
Standing on the doorstep were two officersâone tall and stern, the other younger, fidgeting nervously.
âIs everything alright?â Mark asked, trying to make sense of the situation.
The tall officer didnât smile. âWe received a call from your neighbor,â he said. âShe claims youâre interfering with her access to emergency services.â
Mark was taken aback. âWhat?â
The younger officer cleared his throat, looking around awkwardly. âShe said you deliberately blocked her Wi-Fi. Claims she couldnât make an emergency call on her phone. She said youâve âcut her off from the world.ââ
Mark stared in disbelief before a laugh escaped him. âI changed my Wi-Fi password this morning. Thatâs all. Sheâs been using my network for free for the last two years. I just decided to cut her off.â
The officers didnât share in his amusement.
âDo you mind if we come in?â the older one asked, his voice devoid of any humor. âJust need to check things out.â
Mark hesitated. There was something in the officerâs tone that didnât sit right with him. But after a moment of doubt, he nodded and stepped aside.
âSure. Go ahead.â
As the officers entered, an unsettling feeling crawled through Markâs chest. He couldnât place it at first, but it lingered, growing heavier.
