Juneteenth is a day to celebrate those who took action and to take action ourselves!
Dr. Ibrahima Seck, Director of Research at The Whitney Plantation talks about the impact and importance of educating ourselves and others about the story of slavery and its legacy. The Whitney Plantation is a memorial and museum that facilitates this education, and it's the first ever memorial to slavery in the United States.
This clip is from the podcast episode "Bearing Witness: The Whitney Plantation" where Dr. Stephanie Arel and Jessica Daugherty learn from Dr. Ibrahima Seck and Ashley Rogers (Executive Director) about the work of memorializing and commemorating those who were enslaved on this plantation in Wallace, Louisiana. You can learn more about The Whitney Plantation by searching for the full episode by title on your favorite podcast platform.
Celebrating Juneteenth! One thing, among many, to celebrate on this day is that Knowledge is Power.
The Whitney Plantation, a memorial and museum in Louisiana, has brought knowledge to light. Their ground breaking research has brought forth the names and histories of people who were enslaved on this plantation, information that was purposefully buried and lost.
The work of Dr. Ibrahima Seck and Ashley Rogers at the Whitney Plantation has brought these generations of families honor and burial, recognition and memorial. The Whitney Plantation is an important place to visit for all Americans, a memorial and museum where you can commune with the past and continue the necessary process of healing (in its many forms and meanings).
You can listen to the full episode of Bearing Witness: The Whitney Plantation on your favorite podcast platform. The podcast was created and is hosted by Dr. Stephanie Arel and produced by Jessica Daugherty at Shrine13.

Announcing a brand new podcast series from Shrine13 in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Arel ( Stephanie Arel )
Bearing Witness: The Impact of Memorialization
( Bearing Witness )
In this podcast series produced by Andrew W. Mellon Fellow Dr. Stephanie Arel and award winning documentary filmmaker Jessica Daugherty, we will speak with museum and memorial workers including curators, collectors, writers, and directors about the impacts their work at memorial sites has on communities and themselves to investigate the importance of the roles they play in society.
In our first episode, we speak with Lisa Conte, head conservator at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and Alexandra Drakakis, a former curator who worked there for 13 years, to discuss the impact of the memorial and museum on the survivor community and on their own lives.
In honor of those lives lost on 9/11. And in celebration of the resilient spirit of surviving families and the people of New York City. We will never forget.

Independent documentary videographers and photojournalists are an essential element in the decorporating and decolonizing of public and private media. In a world where a camera is a weapon, these individuals hold great responsibility. But what defines this responsibility, what are the ethics, and what are the drivers for undertaking this kind of task?
On the next Sonic Altar, we talk with photojournalist Ben Camacho and documentary photographer Jayrol San Jose. As the artistic team, Westside Storytellers, they create short form documentary films about local topics with universal messages. Based in Southern California, often engaging with communities on both sides of the US/Mexico border, they have shared stories from people traveling in caravans, people protesting murders of black and brown people by police, people living on the streets, and people working to conserve the last vestiges of environmental health. Find out what went down in SoCal in summer 2020 and what’s the next pressing story they’ll cover in 2021.

Today we are graced to bring to you the music of Portland’s adored rapper, producer, activist and radical artist, Jordan Fletcher,
Check in to www.nettnettradio.com today, Saturday, at 6pm to listen to his fire new album with us, in full. “Somewhere Off Alberta” the album means a lot to us at Shrine13, not far off Alberta ourselves, newer to the neighborhood, and bowing with great respect to our neighbors who have been making the neighborhood so wonderful for many many years before us.
Listening to this album is like opening a door to Fletcher’s realm. With his sometimes warm analog grain and sometimes hard and heavy heart beats laid underneath an acid tongue of truth, you get the understanding that life has not been so easy anywhere off Alberta, but it’s those scars that make for the tough armor Fletcher needs for the continued struggle. He’s organizing in defense of black life daily and is an enriching member of the growing movement in Portland; adding his music to the soundtrack of our Movement. We highly encourage you to focus in on his lyrics.
Listen with us on but then go to Jordan Fletcher’s Bandcamp and buy the Album Somewhere Off Alberta. Or his Venmo/Cashapp is to check his linkinbio for other ways to support his work.
