Announcing a brand new podcast series from Shrine13 in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Arel ( Stephanie Arel )

Bearing Witness: The Impact of Memorialization
( Bearing Witness )

In this podcast series produced by Andrew W. Mellon Fellow Dr. Stephanie Arel and award winning documentary filmmaker Jessica Daugherty, we will speak with museum and memorial workers including curators, collectors, writers, and directors about the impacts their work at memorial sites has on communities and themselves to investigate the importance of the roles they play in society.

In our first episode, we speak with Lisa Conte, head conservator at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and Alexandra Drakakis, a former curator who worked there for 13 years, to discuss the impact of the memorial and museum on the survivor community and on their own lives.

In honor of those lives lost on 9/11. And in celebration of the resilient spirit of surviving families and the people of New York City. We will never forget.

Video collages by JDaugh & Brad Hamers

For this project Frietboer chose a handful of poems from Brad’s recently published book and asked him to record himself reading them. Brad then sent Frietboer the acappellas and he created sound design for each piece.

Here’s a still from one of the video collages.

Join us this Saturday for a one of a kind release day! New Album by Child of No Nation - LA PÁNICA - comes out Saturday from Shrine13.

We will play it live on and then revolt it. Then you can buy it on Bandcamp, and then you can revolt it!

We decided to release on Saturday April 10th to honor the death day of our deep muse and Patron Saint Judith Malina, who is still revolting with us every day. You’ll hear her voice and many others on this experimental record.

RP
・・・
returns with our 2nd release titled La Pánica x You can hear the full album and catch us performing live this Saturday 4/10 on ! We will broadcast the album and then immediately audio revolt it afterwards as we love to do. Please stay tuned for info on times to listen!

The fuel behind this sonic mystery is to create original tracks and challenge ourselves to keep recreating it in new ways that are reflective of our current state. Nothing is meant to stay the same and we embody that with our live shows and experimental nature.
This is not music.

New Sonic Altar this Saturday on

Independent documentary videographers and photojournalists are an essential element in the decorporating and decolonizing of public and private media. In a world where a camera is a weapon, these individuals hold great responsibility. But what defines this responsibility, what are the ethics, and what are the drivers for undertaking this kind of task?

On the next Sonic Altar, we talk with photojournalist Ben Camacho and documentary photographer Jayrol San Jose. As the artistic team, Westside Storytellers, they create short form documentary films about local topics with universal messages. Based in Southern California, often engaging with communities on both sides of the US/Mexico border, they have shared stories from people traveling in caravans, people protesting murders of black and brown people by police, people living on the streets, and people working to conserve the last vestiges of environmental health. Find out what went down in SoCal in summer 2020 and what’s the next pressing story they’ll cover in 2021.

SATURDAY March 27 / 13:00 PST

On today, we roll out the red carpet for Odd Nosdam who used to open Anticon shows with live mixes such as this one, Les Mixtape 2001. You may hear psyche, breaks, beats, drums, samples - maybe even some softness. The artist, an Anticon founder, of cLOUDDEAD fame, is a purveyor of sound like no other. To hear more Odd Nosdam definitely find him on Bandcamp and Soundcloud.

A kind visitor. Impeccable taste. 5 stars.

Hamza Al Khatib is a filmmaker, writer, educator, and father in Jordan who recently completed his first short narrative SAMIA and is developing his first narrative feature SUFFOCATION. Both films will center the stories of women and the deep meaning of family, springing from personal family experience. One such experience involves tear gas and it’s horrific and criminal effects. We discuss the use of teargas in Palestine and around the world and we read from a report by Don’t Shoot Portland about the effects of the use of teargas, cs, or other so called non-lethal agents. Al Khatib shares a little background on his heartbreaking but resilient new feature film, SUFFOCATION, and how teargas, a deadly mainstay in his life growing up in the Palestinian border city of Ramallah, became the violent catalyst of his dramatic feature script. This week, the Sonic Altar is filled with music from Al Khatib's favorite musicians and the composers he's worked with. Follow .alkhatib12 and look for his film SAMIA, set to be released by MAD Distribution in 2021.
