Just before the pandemic, I attended a co-worker’s New Year’s Eve party.

I felt fine upon arrival, but at some point during the party, I experienced what I later learned to be a panic attack.

The next day at work I was still shaken, and my boss urged me to go see a doctor, so I did. After answering pages of questions, the doctor diagnosed me with severe anxiety and depression.

Then the pandemic started and I ultimately lost my job.

With the state of the world during that time, and the loss of my job, I had no choice but to find a way to sell the only thing I was good at: MUSIC.

The challenge of turning a talent into a service wasn’t easy… but the process forced me to get outside of myself and focus on solving someone else’s problems.

I can’t say the exact moment it happened… but somewhere over the span of time when I finally started getting clients, the depression was somehow replaced with a sense of purpose and fulfillment… even Joy.

I didn’t even notice it until a friend said “you look happy”. That’s when I realized that something profound had happened.

I realized that G-d was teaching me that there is no higher calling than service to His other children. And as such, there is no better cure for depression than helping others.

I realized that when I was diagnosed with depression, I was constantly thinking about “me” and “my problems”… When that mental habit was interrupted by the necessity to “help others or starve”, the depression vanished.

I don’t know the science behind this… but whatever it is… I’m glad it worked. And I’m convinced that serving others cured me of depression - and continues to be a source of fulfillment and joy that compounds.

If you or someone you know is battling depression, I encourage you to find ways to be of service to others… volunteer, start a small business… helping others is good for the soul.

I love DJ’ing for Hispanic brides and their families.

It’s still very early in the event and the ladies are already dancing.

Energy management is very important on the dancefloor. So in order not to wear them out to soon, I slow it down to a groovy cumbia to give them a chance to chill and enjoy.
