We had so much good food in Cusco! Everything we ate was delicious, and very well priced! If we had to choose, our favorites were probably Llama cafe, .cusco, and Ofrenda. In our opinion, you really can’t go wrong!

👉🏻 Comment “PACK” and we’ll send you our favorite trekking gear 🥾⛰️

After sharing our daily Salkantay Trek videos, we got lots of questions about what we actually wore on the trek, so here it is.

These are all the clothes that got us through:
✅ freezing mornings
✅ hot afternoons
✅ rain, sleet, and mud
✅ 5 days hiking to Machu Picchu

Some clothes didn’t make the cut, but these are the pieces we’d bring and wear again.

And luckily for you, a bunch of our favorite trekking layers and hiking essentials are currently included in REI’s biggest sale of the season.

Whether you’re hiking the Salkantay Trek, traveling Peru, or just building a better hiking wardrobe, hopefully this helps make packing a little easier.

Save this for your Peru trip planning!

Today is the fifth and final day of our Salkantay Trek and we finally make it to Machu Picchu! Our tickets into Machu Picchu were at 6 AM so we were up at five to catch the bus at 5:30.

👉🏻 Comment “Machu” to get the full scoop on our last day of the trek!

When booking with Salkantay trekking company they usually get you circuit two tickets unfortunately by the time we booked our tour, the circuit two was sold out so we did circuit three and circuit one which I think was fabulous.

You get some insane views plus if you’re lucky you’ll see some llamas and alpacas running and playing like we did!

Then it was back to Aguas calientes for lunch and the train. We got to take the Perurail vistadome observatory train and it was spectacular- highly recommend!

We bused back to Cusco to get our luggage and then it was goodbye to our group and our wonderful guide Julio!

We honestly had the most amazing time with and our guide !!

We’re on our last day of hiking before reaching Machu Picchu. There is another big elevation change today, but nothing like day 2! And with views like we had, we really can’t complain!

👉🏻 comment “jungle” if you want the whole day 4 experience and our tips for today!

We made a stop at Llactopata ruins where got our first views of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu! And then made our way back down the mountain and to aguas calientes. And then time for a celebratory dinner to commemorate our long trek.

Tomorrow we enter Machu Picchu!

Today’s mileage is a little different, depending on if you’re doing the classic or premium trek. We did the premium trek, and we got to bypass the last bit of hiking on the train tracks and instead took the train to aguas Calientes.

This is a nice “easy” day sandwiched between 2 very challenging days. Today is only 6.5 miles, which is a nice change of pace for the legs after yesterday’s hike. But there are some fun stops along the way.

👉🏻 Comment “COFFEE” to see our full day of our day 3 trek

We visited a passionfruit planation, got to visit a coffee farm and make our own coffee, with delicious home-grown beans, and then also got to visit a hot springs - which was much-needed for recovery.

Then we arrived at the super jungle domes, more amazing geodesic domes with great views. Were so close to Machu Picchu ⛰️

Today is the hardest day of the trek with 4.5 miles uphill to over 15,000 feet and then another 10 miles downhill. You’re going from the mountains to the jungle so be prepared for all the weather changes, we had a bit of everything - rain, sleet, sun. Including no view at the top of the pass 🥺

If you’re struggling with altitude or just not feeling like you can hike up the pass, you have the option to take the horse to the top of the mountain. Tip took the horse, since he wasn’t feeling well, and basically hadn’t eaten in almost 24 hours.

Gonna be honest- today is more of a mental challenge than anything - it’s a long day - 14.5 miles and about 10 hours total. But just put one foot in front of the other! And your reward is amazing views and warm showers at Mountain sky view!

Let’s hike to Machu Picchu! Day 1 of the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, begins with an early start with breakfast, before climbing uphill!

4.5 miles to base camp which is the incredible sky camp, with geodesic domes, perfect for star-gazing. You’ll eat a quick lunch then hike a steep mile up Humantay lake, this is beautiful but it is steep!

Then it’s back to basecamp where you’ll have some time to relax, eat dinner and then early to bed because day 2 is a doozy!

If you guessed French Polynesia, you were correct! We’re back for the 2nd time!

First island stop is Moorea! The last time we were here it rained for 90% of the time, so we’re finally able to explore more of the island this time! Such a beautiful place 🌺
