Mike’s Drive-In turns 50, and business is booming

Since he was 14 years old, Todd Freeman, now 59, has worked at Mike’s Drive-In, the small burger chain known not just for milkshakes and burgers, but for the smiling cartoon character on its logo, Mike.

Its current owner started working at Mike's when he was 14 and bought the business after founder Mike Martin's tragic death.

Chicken Sammy’s? The Wing Dept.? Fresh Set? You might know these Portland "ghost" eateries by another name: Red Robin, the 570-location chain that's masquerading as four different restaurants on popular delivery apps.

National chain Red Robin operates three ghost brands: Chicken Sammy’s, The Wing Dept. and Fresh Set. Those brands appear on multiple delivery apps and have their own logos, but outside of the branding there is nothing to distinguish them from Red Robin.

September’s wildfire smoke hit local vineyards with all the randomness of a tornado touchdown. Some were hit hard with smoke-impacted grapes, while others were skipped over. When four Willamette Valley winemakers discovered some of their grapes didn’t escape unscathed, they accepted what nature threw at them.

In Japan, this idea of embracing imperfection is called wabi-sabi. In America, it’s known as making lemons into lemonade.

Portland Promenade sees success in 28th Avenue summer trial run

What’s being called the 28th Ave Promenade is part of a larger statewide project called Portland Promenades, which is led by community members and business owners who strove to expand seating for businesses to stay at capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic, all while following social distancing guidelines.

After just a month-long pilot study, the promenade created on Southeast Ankeny Street between 27th and 28th Avenue has been deemed a success by the business owners there.

Beloved Gresham Peruvian restaurant El Inka is reopening in Southeast Portland

On Jan. 6, 2019, Pollos a la Brasa El Inka posted a heartfelt goodbye on Facebook, marking the end of a decade as Gresham’s top restaurant and one of the best places to eat wood-fired rotisserie chicken and other traditional Peruvian fare in the metro area.

This place is Magical! It's called Duffy's Irish Pub in Grays River, Washington. Go there next time you're headed to the Astoria area, its only a ten minute detour if you go through Longview.

Run by an 80 year old man who's owned it for ages. It was completely empty on a Saturday night, seems like a missed gem that needs more attention.
