A whirlwind trip to Pasco, Washington this weekend for the Washington State High School Cross Country Championships.
When his mom reached out to me about coaching Tanner this season I was pretty excited. I love coaching at the high school level, although I’ve coached at the age group, high school, collegiate and post collegiate level.
I knew Tanner would have a ton of genetic talent passed down from his parents. Both were stand out runners in high school and college.
It’s crazy because I don’t think that I’d seen his parents in close to 30 years. We’d all ran on a loaded co ed team in the Rainier to Pacific Relay back in the mid ‘90s and they also worked for me over holiday break one year when I was managing a sporting goods store back in Lewiston, Idaho.
When we started I told them that my number one priority with any athlete (and it should be the top priority for any coach) is to keep the athlete healthy. The next step is gradual progression to watch for improvement throughout the season.
Tanner ran in a lot of the same meets and same courses that he ran on last year and saw a pretty massive improvement in his times this year.
Looking at last year’s state results I knew that Tanner was the 2nd fastest returning runner. He faced that same runner two other times this year and he beat Tanner both times, including last week at regionals where a travel lagged Tanner was third.
The plan for this week was to stay relaxed, get caught up on rest and a short sharpening workout on Tuesday. The race plan was for Tanner to change his race strategy and be the hunter instead of the hunted. Stay with the leader but never take the lead until the finish line was in sight.
The plan almost worked. He was second at the mile and stayed there throughout the race. The leader was the third fastest returning runner from last year’s state meet and he had a breakthrough race himself.
Tanner ended up 2nd, 25 seconds faster than last year on the same course. He beat the top returner from last year, who was also the regional champ last week.
To say that we’re all pretty proud of him is a huge understatement.
