House Votes to Cut Off Money for NPR

WE WILL NOT LET THIS STAND: The U.S. House of Representatives just passed H.R. 1076 ( 228 to 192 ) to prohibit Federal funding of National Public Radio and the use of federal funds to acquire radio content.

The measure, which is unlikely to pass in the Senate, would allow public radio stations to use federal money for operating expenses but not to buy programming content from NPR.

Saxby Chambliss: Elimination of NPR funding ‘not the wisest thing to do’ | Political Insider

BIG BREAKING NEWS: “You know, an awful lot of conservatives listen to NPR. It provides a very valuable service. Should we maybe think about a reduction in that? Again, I think the sacrifice is going to have to be shared by NPR as well as others. But I think total elimination of funding is probably not the wisest thing to do.”

-Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss (GA)

The main topic in the interview of Saxby Chambliss by Denis O’Hayer of WABE (90.1FM) on Friday was the U.S. senator’s involvement in a deficit reduction

In the midst of the Great Depression, our government managed to fund some of the most enduring and memorable documentaries, photographs, art and dramatic plays this country has ever produced. Our need for such cultured and civilizing influences is no less urgent now.

Congress should keep hands off Public Broadcasting

Damn right!

THE worst recession in 80 years and a bloated deficit means the federal government has to cut its spendy ways. But budget cutting is best done with a surgical knife, not a billy club.

The GOP vs. Elmo | E. D. Kain | Opinion Zone | Washington Examiner

"Most of our television news programs are dominated by fluff pieces, celebrity gossip, and the latest political talking points regurgitated in endless cycles over the 24/7 cable networks ... CNN may have had a few good weeks with wall to wall coverage of events in the Middle East, but when things cool down we are still left with Parker/Spitzer."

The other night on I watched a really excellent PBS Frontline investigative report on the dangerously under-funded state of affairs in our medical examiner offices across the country. The implications for justice are huge: with inexperienced, underfunded, often elected coroners filling this role
