Our New Artistic Director - Portland Nordic Chorus

While we have postponed rehearsals due to the pandemic, we are excited to announce our new Artistic Director, Dr. William F. Kuhn! Please take a moment to read more about him, and as always, THANK YOU for your support!

Our chorus has indeed been blessed with great talent in musical leadership. Special thanks to our outgoing Artistic Director Emeritus Vance Sele for taking time to orient and encourage two new Artistic Directors in the past two years since his retirement!   Evan Miles first stepped into Vance’s...

Dear PNC Choristers and Friends,

It is with a decidedly heavy heart that I must inform you that in spite of our hopeful plan to resume rehearsals this month, we must once again postpone gathering to sing in person.

Let me use these words from our beloved baritone, Doug Webster, sent yesterday from his mountain home in Colorado:

"With the Delta Variant being as virulent as it is, we are in the position of leadership in our community.

Acting out of prudence and FORWARD thought, limiting the continued spread of the disease is the fastest way to get us back together.Sadly, there are enough opportunities for the disease to proliferate and, expectedly, evolve.

The virus has limited (not nonexistent) spread with normal conversation. But singing is another level."

It is my hope that each of you who have had the opportunity to receive the strong (but not complete) protection of vaccination has done so. Everything we can do to prevent spread is a public service. For that reason I wear my mask with pride and compassion everywhere I may come in contact with others.

Lately that mask has borne the message 'Crush Delta'. While it does a great job at preventing transmission of virus, it also does a fine job of crushing the quality of whatever singing I may attempt. And singing in full voice with a good mask inevitably involves becoming a bit short of breath while expelling lots of air and particles and aerosols out around the sides.

Many thanks to all of you who have been so creative about reimagining in-person rehearsals. Hold those thoughts! And thanks to our new director, Bill Kuhn, for his flexibility and willingness to work through the continuing uncertainty.

Godt Helbred, Hyvä Terveys, Góða Heilsu, God Helse, God Hälsa, Good Health!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Hello PNC Singers and Supporters,

The Board of Directors is delighted to present to you Portland Nordic Chorus’ new Artistic Director, Evan Miles. Evan stood out from a well-qualified field of applicants by the light of his energy, musicianship, and willingness to problem-solve with the aid of technology in this time when choirs cannot safely be in the same physical space together.

Evan Miles joins the Portland Nordic Chorus after years of creating music in Portland and surrounding areas. Evan is the Founding Artistic Director of the Eugene Gay Men’s Chorus and the Director of Worship Music at Moreland Presbyterian Church in Sellwood. Most recently, he served as Adjunct Director of Choral Activities at Linfield College and as a Guest Conductor for the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus China Tour in 2018.

Evan has sung with the Berwick Academy Chorus of the Oregon Bach Festival, the St. James Collegium of the Proto-Cathedral in Vancouver, and the Eugene Symphony Chorus.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Portland State University, where he studied under Dr. Ethan Sperry, and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Oregon under Dr. Sharon Paul.

In his free time, he is an avid hiker and enjoyer of the outdoors. He’s also a big video game nerd and loves philosophy. Evan currently lives near Multnomah Village with his husband, Brian Robertson, and their lovable corgi, Tucker.

Velkommen, Evan!
Tervetuloa, Evan!

Portland Nordic Chorus

03/18/2020

WE ARE CHANGING OUR NAME to PORTLAND NORDIC CHORUS — A few years ago the Scandia Ladies Chorus and Scandinavian Men's Chorus joined voices to become the Portland Scandinavian Chorus and many of you know us by that name. As our repertoire has evolved to embrace works in the Finnish and Icelandic languages as well as those of the Scandinavian countries Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, we sought a more inclusive title to better represent the cultures we celebrate. Thus, we give you the PORTLAND NORDIC CHORUS, our new moniker as of this year. We are fortunate to have native speakers covering all five languages that coach us in pronouncing and translating lyrics. Our choir is blessed with singers of many heritages, and an audience with a broad appreciation of Nordic culture and music. What a joy to sing all together!

Song Pronunciation – Portland Scandinavian Chorus

SINGERS: MARCH 16 and 23 REHEARSALS CANCELLED (as per the email from Alana on Friday) — In line with public health recommendations, especially given the high number of “at-risk” members we have in our chorus, it is best to take a two week pause in our rehearsals. We will NOT meet today Monday, March 16th or Monday, March 23rd. We will monitor the situation in the meantime and let you know if a longer pause or a cancellation of the season is necessary. Your health and safety and that of our larger community are our foremost concern.

Now is a great time to go to our website and study the pronunciation of our songs!
