A true story. (Well, as true as any Facebook post these days.) A young robber breaks down an apartment door and rushes inside. A frail, sickly looking man in a ragged stained bathrobe comes out of the bedroom using a walker. "Give me all your toilet paper!" the robber says. "Why" the old man asks. "I have a gun!" the robber says. "I have COVID 19 and coughed on all my toilet paper" the old man says. "[email protected][email protected]#[email protected]$$KKK!!!" the robber screams then sprints to an open window and leaps out. The old man smiles. His apartment is on the 27th floor. He tosses the walker aside, drops the bathrobe to reveal a sleek Nike track suit and jumps on his treadmill for his daily 5 mile run.😉

I drove out to our old family farm a couple of weeks ago during one of my infrequent return trips to Michigan. I make it a point to go there and see the huge old barn (picture here from a 2012 visit.) I spent many hours working and playing in as a child. It has always brought back fond memories and made me wonder how I would feel to still be working on, perhaps owning a farm today. Not this time. This time it brought sadness as half of the barn had collapsed into a rubble. I will never go back to see it again.

8 cases of new books to donate to schools, hospitals, etc. The publisher of The Cow-Pie Chronicles has sent me 512 brand new copies to donate to schools, children's hospitals, etc. Working on where and how many to donate to each.

05/18/2017

The owners of Publishing Syndicate are retiring. They have some copies of The Cow-Pie Chronicles left in the warehouse. I have asked them to hold off destroying them for a bit to see if I can find people interested in using them for donations. I can get them by the case for $1.00 per copy plus shipping, 64 books in a case so $64 plus shipping for a case. If you know anyone or organization interested in helping find homes for these wonderful kids books, let me know and I will get more info for you. (Original retail price $9.95).

[Excerpt from the USCGA Website]
“Swab Summer is a seven-week traditional military indoctrination. It is designed to help young civilian students transition into the lifestyle of Coast Guard Academy cadets. The training process starts with general military skills and physical conditioning. The training continues with seamanship, swimming and academics. Through the process, students develop self-discipline, military bearing and esprit de corps (the spirit of the corps). They also begin to understand the Coast Guard's Core Values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty. For many cadets the highlight of Swab Summer is their first short cruise on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle. For one week, swabs are introduced to life at sea aboard our famous tall ship.”

The Cow-Pie Chronicles

State and County Fair season is approaching quickly. What better time for kids to learn about life on a family farm with an entertaining, popular family book?

Ten-year-old Tim Slinger and his nine-year-old sister Dana face danger, excitement, and heartbreak in this story of life on a modern family farm. Though Tim (aka Poop Slinger) and "Devil" Dana engage in intense sibling rivalry that gets them both into hilarious situations with barn...

New review: "This book is good, wholesome fun. It's appeal is definitely geared towards boys around the ten year age, but younger readers will be able to keep up as well. Also, there are plenty of 'girl' situations so it's not really just for boys. As an adult, I fully enjoyed it."

Book Review: The Cow-Pie Chronicles by James Butler ~ A Mama's Corner of the World

A new, wonderful review of The Cow-Pie Chronicles. "Would I recommend The Cow Pie Chronicles by James Butler? This is a great book to introduce farm life (and rural community values) to kids. It is also a great way for adult, farm-city transplants to revisit another time and place in their lives. The book made me smile and gave me many opportunities to share a few stored memories with the girls. If you have any connection with farm life--or want to visit it--this is a fun book to share with the kids." (Read full review at below link)

The Cow-Pie Chronicles will be presented at the Bologna Children's Book Fair by Foreword Magazine Spring Edition 2014

I wrote this book based on my life on a farm as a child 60 years ago thinking parents would buy it for their children to learn about a different way of life. To my surprise, many parents bought it for their parents to read and remember their own experiences on farms as children. It has many fine reviews. This is one example by Sandra K. Stiles

This review is from: The Cow-Pie Chronicles (Paperback)

Growing up on a farm I could relate to so much of this. It brought back fond memories. On a farm you have to use your imagination to play. I also remember when my city cousins would visit how much fun they had. I couldn’t wait to spend the night in town with them. It seemed like there was so much more to do. I even recall saying I would move to the city when I grew up. Then like Tim and his family we moved away from the farm. The difference is we sold our farm to move to Florida. We had chores just like Time and Dana. We had accidents that required stitches from doing stupid things or things we weren’t supposed to do. Dana easily adapts to life in the city as did all of my siblings. I like Tim had a hard time adjusting and look forward to one day when my husband and I can move back to a rural area. We currently live in the city because my elderly mother lives with us. She has recently started to reminisce about “the good old days on the farm”. I think kids who have never lived on or been to a farm will enjoy this and learn a lot. I also believe that children/adults who grew up on a farm will enjoy and be able to relate to this story. I, like Tim, can look back on my life and see how living on a farm shaped me and my work ethic. This is a wonderful book and I look forward to reading so much more by this author, and recommending the book to everyone.

Since 1964 the Bologna Children's Book Fair is the most important international get-together for professionals involved in children's publishing. With a distinguished focuso copyright exchange, each year publishers, literary agents, authors, illustrators, editors, translators, librarians, booksellers...

A very nice thank you note from Lisa at Ronald McDonald House, Randall Children's Hospital. I share as encouragement to others to be charitable whenever they can.

Dear James:

'We never thought it could happen to us.'
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard those words. Most recently they were uttered by a young father whose youngest son was suddenly flown to Randall Children’s Hospital with a serious heart ailment. The man, his wife, and their two other sons found themselves here a few hours later. That first expression of surprise is always and immediately followed by another, lengthier expression, this time of gratitude, which generally starts like this: 'And we had no idea how amazing and helpful the Ronald McDonald House would be!'

Such amazement and gratitude are the direct result of your generosity. On behalf of our guests, thank you very much for your gift given in December 2013 of two copies of The Cow-Pie Chronicles. Your kindness enables families who never imagined themselves in such desperate circumstances to experience a level of comfort and caring that are also unimaginable. What an incredible gift!

A few days after our initial meeting, the father approached me again—this time as his baby was about to be discharged from the hospital and the family was preparing to return home. He wanted to know how he might help other families here. That concern, too, is common at the Ronald McDonald House. It characterizes a never-ending circle of caring, in which you remain integral. Thanks again for continuing to help us embrace families whenever what they 'never thought could happen' actually does.

Gratefully,
Kimberlee Harper Hanken
