Today's editorial: Last Thursday
Last Thursday has always been a leaderless, unplanned, open event. Just bring your table and set up, or don't bring a table, or whatever. Show us your art. Make the rent. Is that coming to an end? Will Last Thursday soon be tamed and turned into Saturday Market? Is it time to move on to a worse neighborhood?...

Water boiling has been lifted. Go make some lemonade :)

More about the water: "Justin Norton-Kertson I just listened to the press conference and the news didn't tell the whole story. One test came back positive on the 21st at the Mt. Tabor reservoir. All other tests at all other sites were negative. They retested Table and also upstream and downstream from Tabor and those tests came back negative. Then that exact same scenario happened again the next day. Positive in one spot only then retested negative. Now a third different spot tested positive, with all other tests in all other locations negative. So again they retesting that new spot and around it and waiting for the results. Definitely something to watch. And I'd start boiling water for now. But I don't think we really need to worry."

Portland Public Schools

Schools are on top of it.

FYI at 10:48 a.m.: The Portland Water Bureau has issued an order that all drinking water – including filtered water - must be boiled for one minute due to a precautionary alert about bacteria in the water supply. This means drinking fountains in classrooms, hallways and offices should not be used. Nutrition Services will make necessary adjustments to maintain safety during the lunch hour. We will provide you with more information as soon as we get it. Thanks for your understanding.

Oregon's math education: between Hungary and Greece
Even kids from rich families score far below their peers in other countries. Schools that teach math better pay their teachers more. Jobs relocate to places with better-educated populations.

Bread & Roses Heritage Festival

On this day in 1921:

Italian activists and anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, widely believed to have been framed for murder, go on trial today. They eventually are executed as part of a government campaign against dissidents.

Quote of the Day: “Judge not, lest you be judged.... And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.”

Editorials
Jill Abramson
Maybe Arthur Sulzberger really thought he was firing her because she was mean to the other employees at the Times. Maybe he really did pay her just as much as the men who've held her job. Maybe he's just a publisher who likes to fire editor

Economic inequality soars in Oregon
If you thought inequality was a NYC problem, think again. Oregon's .1% (making more than $1.4 million) are now making more than four and half times as much as they were making in 1980, adjusted for inflation. Their average income was almost $4 million. Everyone else's real income has stagnated or declined: our median was $31,940.

Editorial: Splitters
It seems to be an irresistible human impulse to form clubs, and nearly as irresistible to keep other people out of your club. Ten year olds make clubs and then post signs: "No Boys!" and "No Little Sisters! Keep Out! This means YOU!". But for activists and organizers, this sort of exclusion is a cheap form of community-building, and ultimately cannot lead to success.

When the purpose of your movement is not to win by beating ...

Quote of the Day:
"The family feuds or the village feuds often had to do with an idea of honor. Perhaps it was a peasant idea; perhaps this idea of honor is especially important to a society without recourse to law or without confidence in law." — V.S. Naipaul.
