For tomorrow's Saturday Matinee Broadcast, enjoy The Metropolitan Opera's production of Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos!

In this ingenious quasi–chamber opera, Strauss expresses several aspects of operatic storytelling in a single work, especially in the latter half, an opera-within-an-opera, in which the practical flirtatiousness of the comedienne Zerbinetta contrasts with the grand sentiments of the title diva. William Grant Still's orchestral work "In Memoriam: The Colored Soldiers Who Died for Democracy" deeply touched both critics and audiences when it premiered in 1944, in concert halls and on the radio. Still chose one letter from a listener in Syracuse to release to the press, which read, "I trust that those who return may indeed find a democracy of tolerance and unity – an America, with liberty and justice for all.”

You'll hear this piece today on All Classical Portland! Listen at 89.9 FM in Portland, or anywhere at allclassical.org
