Patagonia sues AB InBev for trying to confuse consumers as to who’s behind its new beer called . . . Patagonia

We can't resist sharing posts about beer and branding. Apparently AB InBev's new brand called Patagonia Brewing Company, recently introduced in Colorado, has the 40 year old iconic outdoor apparel company taking legal action against them. This should be interesting to watch playout in court as well on as in the marketplace.

The legendary outdoor apparel company, which started selling its own beer in 2016, filed a complaint in a California court alleging that the global brewer is intentionally trying to benefit from Patagonia’s 40-year brand legacy.

While they often get lumped together in industry types or job descriptions, marketing, branding, PR and advertising are not all one and the same.

Steve Jobs Figured Out Branding 40 Years Ago. Why Are We Still Reinventing It?

Here at Magneto we have a large white board in our conference room that is used frequently during branding brainstorming sessions. At the top of the board is the word "Simplify" that reminds us to do just that when developing brands for our clients. Here is an article that reflects on Steve Jobs' wisdom when creating the Apple brand years ago, by noting three branding errors that startups often make. Keeping it simple is even more important today than ever.

Weirdly, every entrepreneur wants to be like Jobs but they don't bother to master the basics.

Super Bowl Ad Review: Yard by yard and yawn by yawn

We made it through another Super Bowl. The reviews are still coming in, but the consensus is the game, the half time show and the commercials were all a bit of a snoozer.
Just goes to show us that big production budgets don't always equate to great advertising.

Here is Ad Age's take on each and every TV spot, with links to take another look or view for the first time, if you happen to be away from your TV grabbing another beverage or tasty appetizer. We still like seeing "The Dude" in the Stella Artois commercial and the cross promotion between Bud Light and HBO's Game of Thrones spot was fun as well.

With each 30-second spot costing upwards of $5 million, there was a lot of mediocrity.

Super Bowl Alert: Will Carrie Bradshaw show up for the Big Game?

We can't resist posting at least one Super Bowl advertising info piece. Unbranding Is Dumb

Here is another article from our friends at Fast Company reporting on what we think is a pretty ill advised business trend, that being to unbrand their products. Generic products aren't new and have been around for quite awhile. We believe trusted brands play a vital role in helping consumers lives easier with choosing products they really do prefer.

The key, as always, is for brands to clearly communicate what makes their products great. Magneto continues to be committed to that practice on behalf of our clients.

Brand-free branding is the latest marketing trend, but it ignores the qualities that make companies like Patagonia, Glossier, Airbnb, and Nike so compelling.

Blanding. What a concept. We agree with the insights shared in this post on Fastcompany. Brands should be so much more to be effective, memorable and elicit some sort of connection to your company, product or service. You can be assured, Magneto won't be blanding. Check it out.

How many agency people does it take to run an account? Not nearly as many as clients think

From time to time we hear stories from new clients and prospective clients about bad experiences they have encountered with other agencies who for whatever reason would have way too many agency people attending client meeting and with that charging them for all of those people's time to be "working" on their account. At Magneto, our philosophy continues to be based on running lean teams for our clients to maximize results as efficiently as possible. is an insightful article that explains just how many people should be working on your account.

How many agency people does it take to run an account? In almost all cases it's six, writes Eric Kallman, which is a lot fewer than clients think.
