Hurricane Melissa made landfall earlier today as a category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 185mph. This makes Melissa the strongest storm to ever hit the island and one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin. This storm is not done as it is forecast to hit Cuba and parts of the Bahamas before moving towards Bermuda. Thoughts and prayers to those in Jamaica and in the storms path. WAVY TV 10

A strong coastal storm will bring rain and wind to Hampton Roads tomorrow. Wind gusts along the Outer Banks may reach upwards of 50mph! This will likely lead to more beach erosion and overwash. For coastal Virginia we will be watching high tide for tidal flooding in low-lying areas. WAVY TV 10

Tropical Storm Melissa is forecast to rapidly strengthen this weekend and early next week into our next major hurricane of the season. Ensembles still a bit different in where the storm will exactly track in the short term but when it eventually enters the Atlantic and passes offshore it will likely send a solid pulse of swell towards the east coast. Tropical Storm Melissa has formed in the Caribbean sea and is expected to meander in the region for a few days. This storm will be a major rainfall threat for islands in the storms path due to the storms slow forward speed. Strengthening is likely due to the warm waters in the region but lots of uncertainty remains as to where the storm will go. Stay tuned for updates. WAVY TV 10

Could be a few windows of fun surf this weekend as winds finally look to cooperate along the Virginia and North Carolina coast.
