Here is your weekly update and pictures on the Portsmouth Riverfront Development!

Most noticeable is the Alexandria Park and the Point areas with the concrete layers leading down to the Ohio and Scioto Rivers starting to really take shape.

Landscaping has began with many trees now being put in place at various locations along the river road and pathways.

City workers have synchronized the layout with downtown utility repairs as crews have worked hard upgrading water lines, clearing storm drains, and preparing the main levee systems for summer weather.

The entire project just completed a site tour with project administrators, and State development directors to review the fast paced timeline for completion. October 31st is the drop dead date as all funding at that point will be finished.

Massive amounts of dirt is still being moved behind the flood wall entrance to build up the elevation for the 4,000 seat Kathleen Battle Outdoor Amphitheater. Steel support beams and girders are also being put into place to secure the excavation.

Each week there are new and exciting things to see as the Allard Construction Company continues making the biggest infrastructure project in Portsmouth’s history come to life!

Not quite ready for the Funnel Cake Trucks yet, but each weeks brings us a little closer!

It has been a wild ride this spring bringing into focus the shocking news for many that we live in a virtual vegetation nightmare surrounded by a plant called “Poison Hemlock!”

I truly appreciate everybody who, like myself, learned the danger of this highly toxic w**d once we were able to identify it and became engulfed by its abundance.

Since now that it's past the peak flowering stage, Poison Hemlock will get much harder to identify along with its harmless twin sister known as Queen Ann’s Lace which is also very abundant.

To make sure you know the difference, I am posting both plants side by side for an easy comparison with the bad one on the left and the good one on the right.

Again, the Poison Hemlock is the taller of the two and has a reddish stalk. It also has an unpleasant odor compared to rat urine!

Queen Ann’s Lace has a solid green stem with one tiny flower in the exact center. It carries a much sweeter scent much like a carrot.

As we head into the official summertime solstice this Saturday, June 21st, make sure you remain poison free by simply knowing the difference.

Also on a side note, if you really know what rat urine smells like, you might be running with the wrong crowd! Stay wild, but be safe!

The often overlooked reason that Portsmouth’s Al Oliver is not in MLB’s Hall of Fame!

It is a sinister crime when your own industry where you have been a major contributor to its success suddenly turns against you. This was literally the case beginning in 1985 through 1987 for Al Oliver and 61 other free agent Major League players.

The “Baseball Collusion” case as it is often referred to was put into place as many of the games biggest stars were left unsigned after the 1985 season.

While the court put the process into the hands of arbitration, It was determined in a landmark decision in 1990 that the owners and the Commissioner were found guilty of conspiring to suppress free agent salaries. A global settlement of 280 million dollars in damages was eventually paid out to the players involved. While it was considered a win for justice , in another sense, it was also a loss... a loss of time.

With several good years still left , the three year signing freeze that was in place forced Al Oliver into retirement with several big milestones within reach. One was the coveted 3,000 hits where his 2,743 career total at the time should have been well within striking distance.

Even If you take into consideration those lost years that could have been, Al Oliver’s stats alone over his 18 year Major League career speak loudly for his induction.

A lifetime batting average of .303.
1,326 Runs Batted In.
An on Base percentage of .344
A slugging percentage of .447
A seven time All Star.
A three time Silver Slugger winner.
The 1982 RBI champion.
The 1982 Batting Champion with Montreal and a .331 average.
A member of the 1971 world Champion Pirates.

So what is not worthy of these stats alone? Just image another couple of quality years that were removed because of the infested greed of the puppeteers that pulled the strings. Al Oliver simply put belongs in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.

Never was the proverb in this case any more clear than “ He who has the gold makes the rules.”

Taking life into my own hands, I tempted fate praying that it didn’t erupt as I climbed the treacherous incline to photograph the belly of the beast!

To my total surprise , I found something completely different than the deadly molten lava that I was expecting!

Now you too can see the profound new and fascinating landmark that has become the latest Shawnee State Park creation.
