Check out our new episode with Bill Hoynes and Chris Bjork, authors of More Than Just a Game. Using the phrase “youth sports industry” Bill Hoynes and Chris Bjork bring to light the alarming changes in young people playing competitive sports that has been brought on by the changing economics and attitudes around sports. These two Vassar College professors (Bill, sociology and Chris, education) combine their academic talents with their experience as parents of kids in youth sports to write the book they wish they had available when they were first negotiating the promise and peril of the new elements of kids playing sports.

Last Sunday, November 24th, we discussed various ideas about the recent election. With our guests, Uncle Mike Hansen and Sydney Kovel. The show is titled “Wondering, Talking and Speculating.”

The co-host, Poet Gold and PeterLeonard, talk with on-air radio personality Uncle Mike and Vassar student Sydney Kovel about the results of the recent Presidential election. All participants expressed some surprise as they offered different theories for Trump's victory, ranging from a weak Democratic VP choice to a failure of the expected youth vote to turn out for the Dems.

Last Sunday, November 17, we hosted Brian Doyle, a community activist on our ” National Elections/
Local Life” episode. On the show, we speculate about the local effects of the recent national election.

Brian Doyle, the former CEO of Family Services, a multi-focused Hudson Valley human services organization, delivers a passionate personal and civic assessment of likely changes in local life. He is clearest in his pessimistic perspective when focusing on people in need and the human service agencies that support them. This is true for immigrants, people living in poverty, and people with developmental disabilities. Doyle also stresses the role of local government in a more positive light.

For our show today, November 10th, we welcomed Mary Flad, a visual artist and novelist. It tells of a local artist’s surprising, late-in-life novel and is titled "An American Story Emerges.”

Mary Flad, a longtime Hudson Valley visual artist widely known for her textile art, is publishing her first novel, “Many Long Years to Home.” Flad has worked on this historical novel, based on the life of her great-great-great-grandmother, Margaret, a nurse born in Ireland in 1798, for over 30 years. The story is a multi-generational account of a family of immigrants in New Haven, Connecticut, highlighting Margaret’s ability to “endure” in 19th-century America. There will be a book launching party at Gallery 43 on November 24 at 4:00 in Poughkeepsie. Be sure to check it out!
