My late sister Jewel was a child psychologist in Oklahoma City. She and I had similar experiences of leaving Liberia and moving to different countries (Germany and the United States), having to navigate life while feeling like outsiders.
The sting of rejection, while it was painful at the time, gave us a type of empathy that others don't always seem to have. In 2013, this experience sparked the idea for something very special that I want to share with you today.
"Lily's New World: An American Story"
Lily has just arrived in America from Liberia with her family — and everything feels new, loud, and confusing. From unfamiliar food to classmates who don’t understand her, Lily must find her voice and a way to belong in a brand-new world.
Told with warmth and honesty, Lily’s New World invites young readers into the tender journey of a brave little girl learning to embrace who she is and share it with others.
Perfect for ages 4–8.
Lily's story is loosely based on my childhood experience of arriving in the United States at the age of five Before her passing, my sister used her insight in psychology to help develop the book's themes. I truly hope it will become a tool for healing, starting with the youngest of us.
I hope you will get a copy for yourself or the children in your life.
