My late sister Jewel was a child psychologist in Oklahoma City. She and I had similar experiences of leaving Liberia and moving to different countries (Germany and the United States), having to navigate life while feeling like outsiders.

The sting of rejection, while it was painful at the time, gave us a type of empathy that others don't always seem to have. In 2013, this experience sparked the idea for something very special that I want to share with you today.

Lily has just arrived in America from Liberia with her family — and everything feels new, loud, and confusing. From unfamiliar food to classmates who don’t understand her, Lily must find her voice and a way to belong in a brand-new world.
