Nicholas Jamerson laid the foundation for the contemporary Kentucky and Appalachian sound and its meteoric rise in popularity. Even if you aren’t familiar with his music, I guarantee your favorite musician knows it. Many have studied it, borrowed from it, and then shared their music around the globe. The Kentucky music scene is what it is today because Nicholas Jamerson, The Morning Jays, and Sundy Best have worked tirelessly to hone their craft and share their talents with us.
Introspective with the heart of a poet, years on the road and in the music business have shown him who and what are important. That is so apparent if you saw him with his partner and children (1 still in utero) at Sleeping in the Woods. This past May was the fourth annual Songwriters’ Festival at beautiful Hidden Ridge Camping, in Monticello, KY. Each year Nicholas, Ginger and John Smithwick, their families and friends, host an amazing weekend of exceptional music in a family-friendly, positive environment. This has even grown into a special afternoon and evening for little ones and school-aged kids/teens, thanks to Gina Rose of the Kent Rose Foundation. My apologies if I sound like a name dropper but this goes to my point that Nicholas is intentional and discerning with his time, talent, and environment and he sees value in Pickin’ in the Backwoods.
No doubt he got the rundown of last year from little sister, Emily Jamerson. If you were at 2025 Pickin’ you know that she killed it with her first full-band show. Go listen to Sunday Dinner if you want to hear Emily and Nicholas together.
Having followed his career closely for well over a decade, every live show has been top-notch. From the party days of his twenties to the clear-eyed, reverent man of today, his powerful lyrics, energetic shows and artistic improvisation really come alive when fueled by an attentive, appreciative audience.
Nicholas’ set alone is worth the price of admission. If you need more proof, go listen to Linda James and then Hindman. See you at Pickin!
