Before the corporate boardrooms and the Rutgers degree, there was a veranda in Morne Rachette.

People often ask me where I got my entrepreneurial drive. They think it started with my first "real" business, but if you want the truth, you have to go back to the weekends in Dominica.

My mother would make her homemade ice cream, and then it was time for my sister and me to get to work. We would head up the hill to my grandmother’s house, set up shop on our neighbor Kennedy’s veranda, and serve the community.

At the time, I was just a kid helping my mom. I didn't realize I was actually in a masterclass for life:

Customer Service: I learned how to greet neighbors and make sure every scoop was served with a smile.

Consistency: Rain or shine, the community expected that ice cream, and we had to be there to deliver.

The Value of a Dollar: I saw firsthand how hard work translated into something tangible for our family.

I didn't know it then, but standing on that veranda was where the foundation was laid. It’s where I learned that if you have a quality product and the grit to show up, you can build something from nothing.

From the hills of Morne Rachette to the Mary Kay trunk shows at Rutgers, the lesson has remained the same: Success isn't given; it’s served.

I am so grateful for those early days and for a mother who taught me the power of work before I even knew what the word "entrepreneur" meant.

What was the "chore" you did as a kid that actually turned out to be a life lesson?

Now that you have had a trip down my professional journey, let dabble a little into my entrepreneurial journey.

When I started at Rutgers in 1999, I made a promise to myself that most people thought was impossible: I was going to graduate debt-free. At a time when tuition was around $3,000 a semester on the high end, it still felt like a mountain to climb. I already had a full-time job, but between tuition, rent, and my car note, the math wasn't mathing. I needed a bridge.

While my friends were heading to parties, I was hosting skin care classes and trunk shows. I spent my "extra" hours learning:

How to close a sale.

How to manage a P&L (Profit and Loss) statement.

How to build a customer base from scratch.

That "side hustle" wasn't just about lipstick and skincare; it was my ticket to freedom. It paid for the books, the gas, and the classes. It taught me that if you want a different life, you have to be willing to work a different schedule.

I walked across that stage at Rutgers without a penny of student debt, and more importantly, I walked away with the soul of an entrepreneur. 🎓💼

Looking back, the professional success I’ve had since then didn't start in a boardroom—it started in 1999 with a pink catalog and a goal to own my future.

Following hip surgery, I was determined to get back to work. I pushed my recovery and returned an incredible two weeks ahead of schedule. That urgency proved to be fate: I arrived just as a full-time spot opened up on my assigned team (created by a colleague’s department move), and I was immediately hired! (Of course there was protocol, an interview, paperwork etc)

The opportunities kept coming. The very next year, I pursued professional development and enrolled in the on-campus class for the CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) certification. After focused study, I proudly became a CSCP in 2017.

This certification opened up a world of leadership. As a CSCP, I was invited to serve on the board for the Princeton APICS chapter, eventually leading to the incredible honor of serving as President of the board for two years. The experience gained from that leadership role was truly indescribable and invaluable.

Looking back at this chain of events—from a determined comeback to securing a job, earning a certification, and leading a professional chapter—I am overwhelmingly grateful for the foundation that was laid a decade ago. Thank you to everyone who supported this amazing journey!

The Next Chapter in My Professional Journey! 🌟

When I first started this role in a temporary capacity, I never expected it to turn into a multi-month commitment. One month quickly became two, then three, and I was genuinely enjoying the ride!

However, life—and my left hip—had other plans! With no clear end date in sight for my temporary role, I made the decision to move forward with a much-needed total hip replacement. Surgery was scheduled for June 10th, just one week before my twins’ birthday!

This meant being out of the office until the end of August. I was nervous about taking that much time, but my incredible boss was so gracious and supportive, simply telling me, “Let us know when you want to come back.” That flexibility and trust meant the world to me. 🙏

During my time away, I was fortunate enough to meet Harolyn, who stepped in as my replacement to keep things running smoothly while I focused on getting back on my feet. Since we have become very good friends. Thank you Harolyn!

This experience has truly reinforced the value of a supportive workplace and the importance of prioritizing your health. Excited to share more as I continue to grow here!

Jounen Kwéyòl, which translates to Creole Day, is one of Dominica’s most significant annual cultural celebrations.

It is observed on the last Friday of October and is a key highlight of the island’s broader Creole Heritage Month. The main focus of Jounen Kwéyòl is to preserve and promote Dominica’s Kwéyòl (Creole) language and its rich cultural heritage.

🇩🇲 Key Aspects of the Celebration:

Date: Last Friday in October (coinciding with the independence season).

Significance: A celebration of Dominica’s Creole identity, which is a blend of African, European, and Indigenous Kalinago traditions.

Attire: People are encouraged to wear their National Wear or variations made of Madras cloth.

For women, this often includes the elegant Wob Dwiyet or the Jupe ensemble.

Men typically wear a Madras jacket, a white shirt, black slacks, and a red sash.

Cuisine: The day is a feast of traditional Creole dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Popular foods include:

Callaloo soup

Bakes and codfish

Roasted breadfruit

Smoked herring

Fig and codfish

Local drinks like Cocoa Tea and Sorrel juice are also enjoyed.

Music and Dance: The air is filled with traditional Creole music, including styles like Bèlè, Quadrille, and Lapo Kabwit. Traditional dances are performed, and instruments like the Shak-Shak and Tambos are prominent.

Language: Locals are encouraged to speak the Kwéyòl (Patois) language, with cultural activities and storytelling often conducted in the native tongue.

The celebration is a vibrant, island-wide event that draws locals and tourists alike to experience Dominica’s unique cultural tapestry.

March 2015 was a turning point, though at the time, it felt more like a cliff edge. I was on my final week at Pretzel Crisps, the layoff date staring me down, and the anxiety at home was palpable. We had just made some big family decisions—the kids were starting a new private school, and I'd gotten a newer car, adding significant strain to the budget. My career safety net felt shredded.

Then the phone rang. It was a recruiting agency with a lifeline: a one-month contract position.

One month! It wasn't the stability I desperately needed, but it was something. It was an opportunity to keep my skills sharp and keep a paycheck coming while I continued the job hunt. With no other prospects on the table, I took it. It was a true leap of faith—a gamble on myself and my supply chain experience. I walked away from the familiar and into the complete unknown, trusting that this temporary bridge would lead somewhere solid.

Little did I know, accepting that one-month role would become one of the most significant pivots in my professional life. Stay tuned for the next post when I share what that brief assignment turned into...

After 10 incredible years, I’m reflecting on my career journey and feeling so grateful!

Seven years into working at the Snack Factory, the company was sold to Snyder’s-Lance. We were forced to look elsewhere for employment. We woke up one morning and it was all over the news. Our cute little pretzel crisps family, would be separated

It is wild to think about, but during my last two weeks there, I was training my replacement in Hanover, PA, when I got a call about a one-week temp assignment at a CPG company. At the time, I thought a week was better than nothing, so I accepted.

Little did I know, that one-week gig would turn into a 10-year career, counting to 11 years!

This company not only gave me a professional home, but also provided the opportunity to get certified in supply chain, earn my hazmat certification, and opened doors to serve on multiple boards—both supply chain-related and otherwise. I’m so proud of the work I’ve done and the person I’ve become. Here’s to never underestimating the power of a single opportunity!

Starting a new job is always a big change, but also very exciting. After a seven-year tenure with C&S Wholesale - Pathmark, started a new chapter at Pretzel Crisps.

Leaving C&S Wholesale - Pathmark felt bittersweet. It was where I learned the fundamentals of the industry and gained experience that has been invaluable.

I was thrilled to join the Pretzel Crisps team. It was a small, intimate company of about 13 people, and I was so excited for that close-knit environment. It was at a place like this that I made lifelong friends that I still hang out with 17 years later, a place where the employers saw you as a person first and then an employee.

I learned so much at Pretzel Crisps, from order management, negotiating freight rates, and return logistics. I got a chance to work with retail behemoths like Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club, and Target, and truly came to understand the logistics of product management. I’m so grateful for this experience. The skills learnt there, I have carried with me not only through my professional life but also through my personal life.

It was at this job I first became a homeowner, a wife and a mother.

Wow, what a journey it's been! I'm so grateful to everyone who has followed along with me as I've shared these stories. It means a lot to have your support and to be able to look back on this incredible ride with all of you.

After seven years working as a procurement analyst, with a must-do focus on the Pathmark account, it was time to go. Pathmark had filed for Chapter 11, and I knew I needed a change. A small food company in the Princeton area was hiring, and I was interested. Working for a smaller company was everything I dreamed it could be—it was intimate and people-oriented. It would be another seven years before this company was bought out, and it was time to move on again.
