I Was Cooking Dinner When a Police Officer Knocked on My Door: “Sir, Your Wife Died in a Car Acci:dent an Hour Ago.” My Blood Froze. “No—She’s Upstairs Asleep.” But When We Went to the Bedroom, His Hand Went to His Side… The knock at the door was sharp, urgent. I wiped my hands on a dish towel, annoyed at the interruption. When I opened it, a uniformed officer stood in the rain, his face pale and grave.
“Sir,” he said carefully. “Your wife was involved in a serious car accident about an hour ago. I’m sorry to tell you…” My laugh was shaky, nervous. “That’s impossible. She’s upstairs, sleeping. She had a migraine earlier.”
The officer hesitated, studying me with that look of pity only cops know how to give. “Sir, the coroner has already confirmed the victim’s identity.” “No,” I snapped. “You’re wrong. I’ll prove it to you.”
I led him up the stairs, heart pounding. I pushed open the bedroom door. There she was—or at least, her silhouette under the blanket. Blonde hair spilled across the pillow. I exhaled in relief. “See? She’s right here. Sleeping.”
But the officer didn’t relax. He stepped closer, his eyes narrowing, hand sliding instinctively toward his holster. The figure on the bed didn’t move. No breathing. No rise or fall of her chest.

After my cat brought home puppies from who knows where, a policeman knocked on the door. His words made my heart stop…
That evening began quietly. I was folding laundry when suddenly Lili’s voice rang out from the living room:
— Mom! She has something in her mouth again!
— Who? — I froze mid-step.
— Marsa! A puppy! Another one!
I ran to the window and couldn’t believe my eyes: my tabby cat was walking across the yard, carrying a tiny black bundle in her teeth. In the corner of the room, in a woven basket, already lay four just like it — tiny, their eyes tightly shut, with warm, velvety sides.
Marsa carefully placed the new one next to them, gently licked it, and curled herself around them as if protecting them from the whole world.
I couldn’t understand: where was she finding these puppies? And why was she bringing them one by one?
During the day, there was a loud knock at the door — so loud that the glass in the frame rattled.
I froze, and Lili clung to my hand as if sensing something bad.
I opened the door — there stood a policeman and Mrs. Miller, our neighbor, known for noticing everything and everyone. Her face was darker than a storm cloud.
— Do you have a cat? — the officer asked without wasting time on greetings.
— Yes… — I nodded cautiously. — What happened?
He held my gaze for a long moment, studying me, then quietly said:

My husband punched my pregnant sister in the stomach—and thank God he did.
The room erupted in screams the moment my husband’s fist connected with my sister’s stomach. Eight months pregnant, she folded in half, crashing backward into the gift table as balloons burst and presents toppled to the floor.
“What is wrong with you?!”
I shrieked, shoving him back while my mother sobbed into the phone with 911, crying, “a/ssault on a pregnant woman.” My dad and brothers pinned my husband against the wall while I dropped to the floor beside my sister, who was clutching her belly, gasping, “Don’t touch it. Hurts too much.”
