‼️30,000 fill the streets of Providence for No Kings Day

A protest against the Trump Administration on Oct. 18 filled the State House’s yard. The crowd of protestors, over 30,000 people strong, proceeded to march from Providence Place to Kennedy Plaza, chanting, waving signs and passing flyers. Individuals of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs came together under one motto: “No Kings!”

The protest was one of thousands under the “No Kings” moniker that occurred on Saturday. Organized by the Rhode Island Resistance Coalition, it was the largest of multiple demonstrations within the state alone.

🏐Jordan Bou and Wellness and Exercise Science Club aim to help students elevate their health🏐
The Wellness and Exercise Science (WES) Club at Rhode Island College aims to make a big resurgence; one of the key pieces is Jordan Bou, a junior WES major leading the way for what could be a lifestyle-changing club for many students on campus.

“We’re taking a ‘ground up’ approach and allowing our members to help shape the direction we take for the club itself… At the end of the day, our club and even major is about providing

🎉RIC’s Homecoming weekend is packed with exciting events🎉
“Homecoming, Alumni & Family weekend is one of the biggest celebrations of the year at RIC,” wrote Dean of Students Ted Zito in his email promoting the event.

RIC’s Homecoming/Alumni and Family Weekend will take place October 17th-18th. This event, formerly titled RICFest, is run by RIC’s Alumni Association each year in the fall. RICFest previously featured a festival on the Quad, with activities such as free food and arts and crafts. However this year the Alumni Association plans to make the event even bigger.

‼️Constitution Day panel brings insights from various Rhode Island College Students‼️

A Constitution Day panel was held Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 17, in the south faculty dining room at Donovan Dining Center for a discussion on various topics surrounding the Constitution and key topics that impact Americans today. Dr. Natalie Rogol of the political science department at Rhode Island College moderated the panel attended by both students and faculty.

Five students took part in the conversation, each taking on a “student role” on campus and providing their perspectives. There were four separate topics discussed in the hour-long conversation.

📰The Anchor welcomes you to campus: a guide to getting involved📰

The Anchor newspaper has remained Rhode Island College’s independent, student-run publication for close to 100 years. Yes, you read that right. The Anchor and its many generations of dedicated staff have been in operation since 1928. Despite being close to a century old, our mission has remained the same: to serve and represent RIC’s student body as a trustworthy news source. And now you have the opportunity to play a part in our long-running goal!

Joining The Anchor is simple and begins with attending a meeting. There, interested students will learn about the ins and outs of professional writing and student journalism outside of a classroom. ‼️Students protest “P&E” report at Rhode Island capitol building‼️

“Why can’t we have a say about what majors get shut down? Why can’t we have a say about what majors stay open?” Hak Kay, a gender studies and film major at Rhode Island College, asked the audience. That was the primary question on protesters’ minds as they gathered by the entrance to the statehouse Thursday, equipped with signs and delivering passionate speeches into a microphone.

The crowd was made up of dozens of Rhode Island College students, many from majors that will be suspended, including the MED in music education, masters in creative writing and BA in women and gender studies. Some who spoke out at the event were even school faculty, including Dr. Leslie Schuster, director of the Women and Gender Studies Department as well as Dr. Elisa Miller, a history and women’s studies professor. Upon hearing that almost the entirety of her class that afternoon would be attending the protest, she cancelled class to attend and speak.

‼️RIC to suspend enrollment of 20 programs, outlined in “P&E” report‼️

A 32 page document released by Rhode Island College’s Office of Provost consists of plans to suspend twenty majors in the fall semester, ranging across multiple departments. Every program listed was given a rationale as to why they should be suspended by their respective department. Consequently, each department has until Oct. 15 2025, to submit their proposed changes, the effects of which will take place immediately.
It is important to note that both the report and President Warner in his email, highlighted the implementation of a “teach-out,” which states that all students will complete the program they are currently enrolled in as planned. No students enrolled at RIC will be forced out of their major, minor or current academic plan before they graduate.

To remain up-to-date on the pending P&E report, The Anchor posts every Monday.
