đź“°The Anchor welcomes you to campus: a guide to getting involvedđź“°

The Anchor newspaper has remained Rhode Island College’s independent, student-run publication for close to 100 years. Yes, you read that right. The Anchor and its many generations of dedicated staff have been in operation since 1928. Despite being close to a century old, our mission has remained the same: to serve and represent RIC’s student body as a trustworthy news source. And now you have the opportunity to play a part in our long-running goal!

Joining The Anchor is simple and begins with attending a meeting. There, interested students will learn about the ins and outs of professional writing and student journalism outside of a classroom. Via a hands-on approach, Anchor staff learn valuable job experience from working and collaborating with a team. Trust us, skills learned at The Anchor look great on a resume.

‼️Students protest “P&E” report at Rhode Island capitol building‼️

“Why can’t we have a say about what majors get shut down? Why can’t we have a say about what majors stay open?” Hak Kay, a gender studies and film major at Rhode Island College, asked the audience. That was the primary question on protesters’ minds as they gathered by the entrance to the statehouse Thursday, equipped with signs and delivering passionate speeches into a microphone.

The crowd was made up of dozens of Rhode Island College students, many from majors that will be suspended, including the MED in music education, masters in creative writing and BA in women and gender studies. Some who spoke out at the event were even school faculty, including Dr. Leslie Schuster, director of the Women and Gender Studies Department as well as Dr. Elisa Miller, a history and women’s studies professor. Upon hearing that almost the entirety of her class that afternoon would be attending the protest, she cancelled class to attend and speak.

‼️RIC to suspend enrollment of 20 programs, outlined in “P&E” report‼️

A 32 page document released by Rhode Island College’s Office of Provost consists of plans to suspend twenty majors in the fall semester, ranging across multiple departments. Every program listed was given a rationale as to why they should be suspended by their respective department. Consequently, each department has until Oct. 15 2025, to submit their proposed changes, the effects of which will take place immediately.
It is important to note that both the report and President Warner in his email, highlighted the implementation of a “teach-out,” which states that all students will complete the program they are currently enrolled in as planned. No students enrolled at RIC will be forced out of their major, minor or current academic plan before they graduate.

To remain up-to-date on the pending P&E report, The Anchor posts every Monday.

‼️Man arrested after assaulting RIC staff member‼️

Rhode Island College was shaken by an incident on Tuesday morning when a man not affiliated with the college allegedly assaulted a member of the housekeeping staff. According to Campus Police Chief James Mendonca, the man arrived at RIC after getting off a RIPTA bus and entered Roberts Hall.

Providence Police later identified the suspect as 31-year-old Keveon Gomera, who was charged with one count of simple assault. The staff member, who as of this writing has not been identified, was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

RIC police have been working closely with local law enforcement to ensure the safety of the campus community. This event has raised concerns about the security of non-students on campus, but authorities are confident that measures are in place to prevent further incidents.

Students and faculty are urged to stay alert and report any suspicious activity to campus police.

🎶Whiskey Ginger performs at 90.7 WXIN’s Loud and Livid: Women’s History Month 🎶

Whiskey Ginger performed at 90.7 WXIN’s Loud and Livid: Women’s History Concert for Women’s History Month. The band consisted of lead singer Emily Pitcairn, Lyle Rae on drums and OJ Mountain on alto sax, but the lineup changes frequently to bring a new perspective on the music. The set list included “Spirit of the Stairway”, “Amoeba”, “Charlotte Song”, “Soy Wax”, “Bittersweet”, “Nosebleed” and “Untitled” which are on Spotify and other music platforms.

Whiskey Ginger’s upcoming EP which is expected to release in April. This will be the band’s first full-length project and more details will be released on their Instagram. In the EP, she wanted to capture moments where it felt impossible to set boundaries. The lyrics are about losing yourself in distractions and other people’s problems.

Usually, Pitcairn starts with lyrics, acoustic, rhythm, then guitar to write a song. But for the new EP, she switched it up by starting with drums and bass. “It was an interesting approach to the songwriting process for me since I am usually so lyrically thinking. That helped me to break out of some boxes that I tend to find myself in the writing process,” she explained.

Now, 47 years later, the club remains active and continues to foster an uplifting and supportive environment for students to celebrate their culture, connect with others and advocate for change, as president Yonas Dabi and social media personnel Ida Faye explain.
