The Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF), has secured its place in the global community as the portal for the best in international independent cinema, earning the respect of domestic and foreign filmmakers, filmgoers and trend watchers. This confluence of art and commerce brought together world-class celebrities, award-winning filmmakers, new talent and audience members in r
ecord numbers last year. Ranked as one of the top 10 Festivals in the United States, RIIFF is a qualifying festival for both the Short Narrative and Documentary Short Film Academy Awards through its affiliation with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the Canadian Screen Awards. There are only 6 film festivals worldwide that share this distinction and RIIFF is the only festival in New England.

The short narrative directed by Stefania Burla, tells the story of a mother and her daughter returning to their native Poland. Due to the tense political situation in the country at the moment, they are planning to turn their backs on their homeland for good. They want sell everything and convince the grandmother to come with them to Switzerland. But the patriotic old woman refuses. Meanwhile, the youngest of the three women increasingly identifies with her roots.

When Kate, an isolated and vulnerable young mother struggling to make ends meet, is offered help by her neighbor Marie, she finds herself pulled into a community that may not be as virtuous as it seems.

Bad At Small Talk is about those uncomfortable, widely accepted social situations where two people feel forced to engage in light conversation. Some are simply shy or awkward, others totally oblivious. They try to power through, but the interactions just get more uncomfortable the longer they drag on. They end up in a confusing back and forth of misaligned and delayed reactions, neither of them getting out more than a couple syllables at a time.
Flickers is proud to present "Funeral at Nine" as a part of RIIFF 2023. This film was directed by Mamadou BARRY, Rodrigo VERAS, Ziyu WANG, Junhao XIANG, Wang YU, and Linfeng ZHOU.
In a small town, a funeral is held after the death of a gardener. Three brothers find themselves lost in their imaginations on the day of the burial.

This film is a documentary short that reveals the extraordinary power of community through an unlikely subject: a YMCA Aquafit class. The documentary gathers numerous moving stories of a multicultural and multigenerational Aquafit class to demonstrate how kindness and caring for others, combined with exercise, can be an antidote for grief, stress, and physical illness. The heartwarming honesty of the participants is a reminder of the power we all have to support one another.

This animated short film follows Kip Marshal and his best friend and dog, Molly. When two bullies pressure Kip to vandalize an old lighthouse on the shores of Lake Erie, the kids are confronted by Captain Wiley, the subject of many local ghost stories. Kip and Molly become separated and must face terrifying supernatural forces in order to be reunited.

The woman knits, unaware her husband keeps her where he wants her- stuck at home, she has no say. All must go his way. But when he sets her one knitting project too many she is gripped by an urge to make a bid for freedom.

This film is a narrative short that follows Siobhán, who previously left the island many years ago, but is now beckoned home by her aunt and forced to face the demons of her past and the crux of her unresolved pain, her relationship with her father. Foxglove is a story about healing and the transformative nature of forgiveness.
