Mathematics, statistics, computational methods -- OH MY!

Daryl DeFord, along with Dara Gold and Amy Becker, wrote an amicus brief quoted in the ruling of Allen v. Milligan, the recent Supreme Court case about gerrymandering in Alabama. The brief centers on mathematics, statistics, and computational methods to evaluate claims and establish baselines in gerrymandering cases. Specifically, it discussed how sampling and optimization relate to the Gingles criteria for evaluating districting plans with respect to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and is referenced on pages 34-36 of the majority opinion.

The Fortieth Annual
T.G. Ostrom Lecture

Professor Thomas Hillen
"Mathematical Oncology of Brain Cancer"
Wednesday, April 26, 2023
7:00pm - SPARK G45

Please join us for an informative discussion with this year's invited guest lecturer Professor Thomas Hillen, University of Alberta, Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences.

Abstract: The human brain is a complex tissue where distant parts of the brain are inter connected through nerve fibres. A modern MRI imaging technique, called diffusion tensor imaging, allows us to take a look into the brain and to see the connecting nerve fibres. Can this information help us to treat brain cancer? In this talk I will show that mathematics is the right language for this problem. I will show how it can be used to guide cancer treatment (joint work with A. Swan, K.J. Painter, A. Murtha).

Lecture Reception:
A reception with refreshments will immediately follow in the Neill Hall Hacker Lounge, room 216.
