The Lit. Bar: Bookstore & Chill Bookshop

For folks who are looking to purchase books that feature diverse characters for their kids or for grown-ups who want to read stellar books from writers of color, please consider purchasing books from a beautifully curated collection from The Lit. Bar.

The Lit. Bar is a Black and Latinx-owned bookstore in the Bronx. Its physical doors have been closed since the city has been on lockdown and the store has been there since April 2019. Noelle Santos is the founder and owner, and could really use the support of the community.

You can easily purchase books online that support The Lit. Bar. Find the online bookstore here: https://bookshop.org/shop/thelitbar

The Lit. Bar opened it’s doors on April 27, 2019 (National Indie Bookstore Day) and is currently the only bookstore serving the 1.5 million people of the Boogie Down Bronx. Our venue encourages curious readers and welcomes literary and community gatherings—while our wine bar connects the great p...

#Inclusion #Accountability
The last week has been really rough, especially for your Black friends, colleagues, and employees. Think about how you may acknowledge recent and current events in a respectful and thoughtful way. This is not an exhaustive list of how to respond, but it is one example of how to start. Before you contact them, keep the following in mind:

-Recognize that the painful news cycle has impacted Black folks differently.
-Don't center yourself. It is extremely difficult to see how the news cycle tries to blame Black folks for injustices toward them. Don't make it about your feelings.
-Respect their space. Don't offer to listen if you aren't ready to hear an honest response. Even if you are ready to listen, understand that they may not be comfortable sharing this with you, now or ever.
-Extend work deadlines if possible. Let them know it is okay to take some time to themselves. A few extra days may help.
-Remind them of any work resources available to them, for example, an extra personal day, counseling, or helping with their workload.

If you still feel like you don't know enough to offer a thoughtful word, then check out these short reading resources to help you better understand the complexities of how media impacts society: egwmedia.com/resources

Editors are often in a powerful position to add to society's collective knowledge through publishing. But how conscious are we about the impact of the work that passes through our hands? Every choice we make about a manuscript either confirms or denies biases, perceptions, and working knowledge....

Our Story

Inclusive Media Solutions LLC provides media creation, revision, and consulting services to companies, organizations, and individuals who want their media and other materials to be more inclusive. We use editorial principles and strategies to help people better align their media with the communities they wish to represent or better serve. We approach inclusion in two ways:

  • Through Content: We create and help revise content so the communities served may see themselves properly represented. This may include building a cohesive narrative, considering a variety of viewpoints, using inclusive language, providing thoughtful imagery, and increasing accessibility.

  • Through Talent: We facilitate collaboration with individuals with diverse identities to provide input and make editorial decisions that reflect communities in positive, accurate, and realistic ways.
  • Inclusive Media Solutions LLC offers a suite of services that helps you put out your best work—in print and online. We evaluate each project individually so that the appropriate solutions can be offered, without cookie-cutter advice that won’t fit the project’s goals. We take the time to learn about your work and the communities you hope to partner with, so that the media created makes sense and aligns with your values. With care and commitment built into every layer, the solutions we build together will facilitate meaningful inclusion.
