Yasujirō Ozu’s “Late Spring” was released on September 19th, 1949.

This was the first in his thematic "Noriko Trilogy". It is followed by “Early Summer”(1951) and “Tokyo Story” (1953). In all three films, Setsuko Hara portrays an unmarried young woman named Noriko.

It was written, filmed, and released during the Allied Powers' Occupation of Japan. Because of this, the screenplay had to pass strict official censorship. Famous sequences—like a bicycle ride passing a distinct Western Coca-Cola sign—subtly allude to this heavy American cultural presence without directly confronting political devastation.
