In one of rock’s great ironies, the only man in ZZ Top without an iconic beard happened to have Beard as a last name.

Despite what some people think, this wasn’t some pre-planned joke by the band. Frank Lee Beard was born in 1949. Twenty years later, he’d join ZZ Top, but at that early point of their career, the band was (relatively) clean shaven.

Throughout the ‘70s, ZZ Top established itself as the premiere purveyors of country-fried blues rock. The band was successful, but towards the end of the decade they were burned out. In 1977, the trio’s members – Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Beard – opted to take a break.

When they reconvened two years later, things looked very different.

R.I.P. Frank Beard

The longtime ZZ Top drummer died today at the age of 77. The band, who had been touring with a fill-in for Beard, have canceled dates in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs, will return to the stage this weekend.

Gibbons shared:

“Today, Elwood [Francis, bass] and I lost a great friend and collaborator and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top.”

40 years ago today on August 9, 1986, Queen played their final concert with Freddie Mercury who would pass away five years later. The audience of 120,000 hears them close out for the final time with “We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions” and “God Save The Queen”.
