Yesterday my friend Rob Dube – the author of "Shine: How Looking Inward Is the Key to Unlocking True Entrepreneurial Freedom – mentioned how his mom never understood why he took on so much.

It made me think:

Most entrepreneurs are driven — sometimes too driven.
We take on more, push harder, carry the load.

But here’s the truth:
Drive without well-being leads to burnout, not brilliance.

It reminded me of something Ashish Kothari, author of Hardwiring Happiness, once said:

“High performance demands high well-being. The path to success does not run through burnout.”

Ashish learned that lesson after cutting his McKinsey hours by 30% — and achieving better results by managing his energy, not his time.

Our energy — calm or chaotic — sets the tone for our teams, our families, our impact.

So this week, pause and ask yourself:
👉 Where am I pushing from depletion instead of energy?

🧡 High performance starts with restoration, not grind.
Take five quiet minutes today — no phone, no agenda. Just breathe.

That’s the question I explored in my latest Freedom Experience episode with Deanna Corbo Walker, CEO of Venturity.

When Deanna stepped into the CEO role, she and her team didn’t just aim to preserve their founder-led culture — they chose to evolve it together.

“The entire team is responsible for the culture.
We all have to model the way, in our own way, and hold each other accountable.”

It’s a powerful reminder that culture isn’t something you inherit — it’s something you live and grow as a team.

Always on the lookout for Small Giants —
those places with real mojo. 💫

You know it the moment you walk in…
the smiles, the energy, the care.

For me, one of those spots is Chardonnay Deli in Kalk Bay.
It’s part of my Cape Town rhythm:
🏊‍♂️ Morning swim
☕ Coffee
🥗 Raw bowl

The food’s amazing — but it’s the people who make it special.
They hire with heart.
They care for their team.
And you can feel it in every detail.

That’s the kind of magic you can’t fake.
That’s Small Giants mojo. 🌿

Always on the lookout for Small Giants — those places with real mojo. ✨

For me, Chardonnay Deli in Kalk Bay is one of them.

Good food. Great people. And an energy you can feel the moment you walk in.

When you take care of your team, they take care of everyone who walks through the door. 💛

I’ve been taking surfing lessons for the past two weeks — and it’s been humbling. 🌊

When I was a kid, I just picked up a board and taught myself to surf with a bunch of friends. We got by fine back then. But 30 years later, getting back on the board hasn’t been so easy.

My coach, Paul Jurgens, has taken me right back to the basics — my stance, how I paddle, even how I breathe. He’s helping me unlearn years of bad habits and rebuild from the ground up.

It’s amazing how, when everything clicks and you catch that wave, it all suddenly makes sense again.

And it got me thinking — business is the same way.
Sometimes progress isn’t about learning something new.
It’s about unlearning what no longer serves you.

Having a coach or mentor who can spot your blind spots and guide you through that process makes all the difference.

Here’s to unlearning, rebuilding, and catching better waves — in surfing and in business. 🏄‍♂️

Ever seen a kid stand up on a wave for the first time? 🌊
Pure joy. Pure freedom.

This morning I met up with my old friend Rory Hansen and his team from
— taking a group of young orphans out surfing.

For these kids, life hasn’t been easy. But in the water, everything changes.
Fear turns into courage. Doubt into confidence.
And suddenly, the world feels full of possibility.

Rory and Natalie’s work is incredible — using surfing to build confidence, teach life skills, and give these kids a brighter future.

Most companies have a purpose statement. Very few actually live it.

It’s easy to write a purpose statement.
It’s much harder to live it.

Purpose isn’t a slogan on the wall.
It’s what your team feels — in every decision, every conversation, every customer interaction.

Ask your team this week:
💭 How does our purpose show up in what we do every day?

If the answer isn’t clear, that’s your starting point.

Because when you align your business around purpose, performance follows.
Every. Single. Time.

These mornings in Cape Town have become something special.

Up before sunrise. A couple of quiet hours to write, journal, and think through strategy. Then out into the water for a surf — a total reset before the day begins.

It’s the perfect rhythm: strategy for breakfast, surf for the soul. 🌅🏄‍♂️
