I wasn’t looking for a witch.
I was just mapping my family tree.

And then there she was: Eleanor Neale.
My 11th great-grandmother.
Accused of witchcraft in 1671.

That moment changed everything.

đź’¬ Have you ever found something in your family history that made you stop in your tracks?
A name, a story, a document something that reshaped how you saw your roots?

Before Salem became the symbol of witch hysteria, women were already being accused in places like colonial Virginia.

Eleanor Neale’s story is one of them and it’s been largely forgotten.

🗺 Why do you think so many stories like Eleanor’s outside of New England, outside of the spotlight - were buried or ignored?

đź’¬ Are we more drawn to the drama of Salem than the quiet patterns of oppression that came before it?

The court records don’t call Eleanor a witch directly.

They call her “a suspicious woman.”

Accusations were subtle… and devastating.

With no formal trial, Eleanor’s life was still upended by whispers, blame, and fear. Her voice was never included in the official record but the consequences were very real.

💬 What do you think the phrase “a suspicious woman” really meant in colonial society?

Was it about behavior? Reputation? Or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time?

👀 Let’s talk about how language was used to control and accuse and whether it still is.

Eleanor Neale was never quiet.

She owned land. She spoke her mind. She didn’t conform and in 1671, that made her dangerous.

It didn’t take spells or potions to be called a witch.
Sometimes, all it took was a woman living outside the mold.

💬 What are some traits you think would’ve made you stand out in 1600s colonial Virginia for better or worse?

Would independence, intelligence, or even just confidence have put a target on your back?

👇 Let’s start the conversation: What would’ve made you suspicious?

Do you think the Salem witch trials are over-taught compared to other witch trials?

We all hear about Salem. The names. The hangings. The hysteria.

But Eleanor Neale’s story?
That’s not in most textbooks.
Her accusation happened decades before Salem, in colonial Virginia.
No trials. No executions. Just whispers, fear, and the slow unraveling of a woman’s life.

Why do you think Eleanor’s story was buried?
Is it because she wasn’t in New England?
Because her name wasn’t in the headlines of history?

I want to know what you think.
Let’s open this one up. 👇

Witchcraft accusations weren’t always about spells and sorcery.

They were about power. Land. Control.

And sometimes, all it took was a rumor.

In Legacy Lore, we explore how a woman’s independence: her voice, her choices, her property could make her a target.

Launching October 14, 2025.

One whisper could destroy a life.

In Eleanor’s case, it did.

No magic, no broomstick. Just the wrong people saying the wrong thing at the right time.

Salem might be the most famous.

But it wasn’t the first.

The fear of witches was already alive and thriving in the colonies, years before the trials in Massachusetts.

And one woman, Eleanor Neale, would find herself at the center of it in 1671.

Her story is part legend, part fact, and all warning.

Imagine it’s 1671. You hear whispers that a neighbor woman is a witch.

No proof—just rumors.

Would you have spoken up to defend her? Or stayed quiet to protect yourself?

In tight-knit colonial communities, silence could mean safety.

But silence also meant injustice.

đź’¬ Be honest: What would you have done?
And how do you think fear still keeps people quiet today?

Legacy Lore is built on real history: court records, land deeds, marriage contracts, even DNA results.

This podcast didn’t start as a story.

It started as a search.

For the truth behind a name.

For the woman buried under centuries of rumor.

For Eleanor.

And what I found?
It wasn’t just a witch story.
It was a warning.
