I don’t believe in banning books in our house (within reason).

Why?

Because when we shut down access to stories, we’re not protecting kids… we’re limiting them.

Books give children a safe way to meet new ideas, wrestle with uncomfortable emotions, and step into perspectives they might never experience otherwise.

They can feel big feelings inside the safety of a story, where we can pause, rewind, or talk it through. That’s far more powerful than pretending those feelings or ideas don’t exist.

The Suggate study (2013) followed children who started reading at 5 vs. 7.

By age 10, the later readers had fully caught up in fluency and comprehension.

Early start ≠ lasting advantage.

And the fastest way to kill the love of reading?

Tell a child they’re failing at it.
