No matter how many times I tell him… he doesn’t get it.

The core problem with Lucy Calkins and Fountas & Pinnel is that the curriculum was built on the belief that children learn to read naturally when surrounded by rich literature.

The science of reading shows the opposite. Reading is not a natural process like speaking, but a complex skill that must be explicitly taught through systematic phonics instruction.

Kids look totally fine in K-2 because the books have pictures and the words are simple enough to guess from context.

Then third grade hits, longer texts, no illustrations, actual complex words, and kids who seemed like strong readers just fall apart.

Nobody can figure out why because they tested fine. They were fine. At guessing. They just never learned to decode.

The best part of homeschooling? No rigid school calendar. 🙅🏽‍♀️

We take the spontaneous beach trip when the weather is perfect. We drop everything for a last-minute flight deal or a random experience that’s too good to pass up.

After 7 years of this, our rhythm is: 2/3 days at home working on personal projects, 2/3 days out in the community.

That shifts with the seasons and travel, but honestly, we don’t really separate “school days” from regular days.

My kids will do bookwork on a Sunday without thinking twice, because that’s just… life.

What does your schedule actually look like?

Do you have a rhythm or does it change constantly?

Let’s try something 🌱👋🏼
Veterans: drop one thing you stopped worrying about.
Newbies: drop your biggest fear right now.

Let’s make this comment section actually useful instead of freaking out about scissors.
