Seizures in senior dogs
My Willie has had a rough few days, first with a grand mal seizure Wednesday afternoon and then a smaller seizure Friday at 1am and another at 9:30pm. He’s 14 and riddled will all sorts of lumps and bumps and this just breaks my heart!! I figured I would share for awareness and to hear if anyone else had similar experiences.

The first seizure I was upstairs working and heard his paws hitting the coffee table and immediately came downstairs and thought he was trying to get a rouge cookie crumb under the couch or something and may have been stuck trying to get up, but when I picked him up he didn’t stop flailing around and I laid him on the couch and he quickly entered the post ictal phase and was panting and it took about 15 minutes for him to bounce out of it. I was on the phone with the vets office as it was happening and got an appt for first thing in the morning. He was fine and excited to see his friends (loves going to the vet). He had just been there 2 weeks ago and had a full senior work up which came back normal with slightly elevated ALT and moderately elevated ALP which he’s been on denamarin for years to keep them stablish. His T4 was just below range at .07. The vet said he looked good for his age and to let them know if there’s another.

The second seizure was 1am Friday and we felt him tense up and start shaking. No flailing around or paddling this time he just moved his head in figure eights and was looking dazed. Took about 15 minutes for him to bounce back but no panting this time. Called the vet and got him a prescription for 250mg of immediate release Keppra and we planned on a 6am, 2pm, 10pm schedule. I should mention he is a biggy iggy at 23.5lb!

We were gearing up to start with the 10pm dose as the pharmacy didn’t have it ready until much later in the afternoon. Unfortuntely he had another episode at 9:30. Realized the signs something was wrong right away as he started licking his lips a lot and seemed like he was fighting it from happening. We kept him safe on the couch and this one was again just body stiffening for a brief bit and then shaking and doing head figure eights looking all around. This time the post ictal phase was much longer and scarier with episodes of heavy panting, we tried cooling him down with some cold water to the paws, pits and groin. He was able to take his first dose a little before 10pm.

I’m a nervous wreck and I feel like I have to watch him every second of the day and over analyzing every twitch or lip licking!! Now that he’s on Keppra he does have the side effect of being wobbly on his feet, so we’re making the home safer for him and blocking his access to the stairs.

Anyone else have an older dog that started with seizures and if so did medication help??

Hi friends! Please wish Ravenna a happy birthday! She and her brother, Rome, had some salmon to celebrate. (Rome had trouble with his birthday hat but was celebratory nonetheless.)

It's Goldie! He's the old boy that spent most of his life locked in a cage. He was pushing 14 years old and was only with us for about 3 months before he died but the appreciation he had for everything was astounding. RIP boy, died 3 years ago but I Still miss him.

My boy turned 11 last month, and has to go for a heart echo soon as they heard a crackle during his check up. It’s probably something manageable with medication. Here he is begging for some of my chocolate yoghurt because he already finished his yoghurt and carrot.

This is Vernon. I got Vernon almost fresh off the track, he retired in the August, I met him at a rescue in September, took him home in October. One thing about Vernon, he is a level 5 clinger with the worst desperation anxiety I've ever seen. He needs contact at all times, I can't go to the bathroom or shower without company. When left alone (even to go upstairs to grab washing or just close the door to do something I needed some space for, his separation anxiety comes out as destruction, going for whatever is closest at the time. This includes multiple remotes, leads, shoes, plastic containers, full loaves of bread (that I've never figured out how he gets to) cushions, doors, candles, backpacks, anything. It's resulted in me having to put him in a crate just to put the bins out or get the milk in off the doorstep. I hate it, but it has to be done to protect him (Before anyone suggests he needs a friend. I've had Sisko for 4 years, he chose Vernon, not me, they get along great, but Sisko is the total opposite of Vernon in every way, and likes some alone time. I also have baby gates he can see through, but he still gets too distressed)

Over the recent UK heatwave I'd woken up to find Vernon asleep on the floor next to the bed a few times. I assumed he was too hot, like me, and I just appreciated the personal space for 5 minutes. However, he did it again Monday night when the weather was a bit cooler. Wanting to encourage a little independence I went out yesterday and brought a new dog bed, set it up in the corner of the room, so he could see me, but I wasn't going to accidentally stand on a tail when I wake up. I didn't encourage him to lay on it, I just gave him the option if he wanted it.

Last night, he came for a fuss, then spent all night on his new bed. I was so happy, I wanted to cry.

It's such a small thing, but this is the first sign that I'm on the right track to one day being able to dealing with the separation anxiety and Vernon being a happy well balanced dog. It's not much, but it's a big step for us and I just needed to share.

Started the day with a croissant for breakfast, and then thoroughly enjoyed her birthday cake for dinner!
Oh how the passing of time brings changes, she’s down 7 teeth and one toe since last birthday 😭also enjoy photos of her from when she was only 3 years old, 5 years before she came into our lives and when she had all her teeth!
