Shakiba Hashemi is an Iranian-American poet, painter and teacher living in Southern California. She holds a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Laguna College of Art and Design. She has exhibited her art in Laguna Beach, Scottsdale and Santa Fe and her work has been published as the cover art for Rattle Magazine.

by mail after a decade of silence

I fry an egg for my unborn girl
tell her the story of our day by the river

but can hear the sizzle
