Do I HAVE to use food in training? Short answer - No.
Long answer - You can use anything that your dog finds valuable to include food, toys, personal play (wrestling/ rough play), sniffing in new areas (hounds), and affection. Every dog is a unique individual and their likes are as vast as humans. Some dogs are soft and like kind, soft rewards like affection and telling them they're the best dog on the planet. Some dogs are rough and tumble and want a good wrestling session for a job well done. Some dogs would prefer to play a short game of tug when they ignore a dog on a walk versus get that one piece of treat you're offering.

I hear all the time from clients, when there's a distraction, food doesn't matter. You're precisely right! It's not as valuable as the excitement of seeing/ meeting friends. But sometimes, a game of tug is more valuable. You have to build the game in distracting environments, but play is 100% valuable for most dogs when they are taught how fun it can be. If you're a dry fart when you play with your dog, it won't be so much fun and everything else will be more exciting than you. Make a fool of yourself and enjoy time with your dog. We double dog dare you!

Is my dog stupid? Short answer - No!
Long answer - Most dogs are more intelligent than we think. Dogs have proven to be able to solve complex puzzles, follow patterns, identify specific scent a long distance away, identify items based on blue or yellow colors (they are dichromatic which means they can see two wavelengths of color), and learn hundreds of words with associations. It's said that dogs can be as intelligent as a 5 or 6 year old child. Most people are identifying the stubbornness or manipulation factor in their dog when they say they're dumb. Dogs can decipher if a person will follow through with a request or not. They know if you are a pushover or if you're serious about what you want. Be consistent with your expectations and your dog will follow your lead. If you are wishy washy in your expectations, they will choose to ignore you. It's up to you!
